19697769New York: Lyle Stuart 1969. First Paperback Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 5 5/8 X 8 1/2 Inches. 255 PP. One of the greatest literary hoaxes of the 20th Century!

An extremely clean copy of this title written under the pseudonym of Penelope Ashe. The book was actually written by 24 Newsday writers in an effort to prove that any book could become a bestseller at the time if enough sex was thrown in. Original price of $5.95 intact on front flap. Something of a cult classic with a backstory unlike any I've ever heard. The Newsday writers apparently tossed the book together to prove that recognition of true literature no longer mattered to publishers and readers alike. Penelope Ashe the author shown in the photograph on the rear panel is actually Billie Young a saleswoman and sister-in-law of one of the actual authors Mike McGrady. The DJ photograph of the attractive young female intended to lure in the malleable purchasers was actually used without permission by the Hungarian born porn veteran and ended up on a lawsuit. The book has since sold nearly 500000 copies.Hint of discoloration to foot of spine. DJ exhibits light wear to edges and folds with a few short closed tears. A scarce hardcover first printing. 1908508688Deighton Bell and Co 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. GOOD. First Edition Thus Lowe's new critical Greek text with english translation on diglot facing pages. 12mo red cloth gilt spine lettering. xi 1 195pp. B/W frontispiece portrait of the statue of Pan and Daphnis at the Mueso delie Terme in Rome. Tips a bit worn spine a bit toned sound otherwise. Annotated with learned and comments in a fine contemporary hand with extensive notes to the rear blanks. Among other reflections the annotator remarks on p. 160 'The excision of over-erotic passages has led here and there to solecism e.g. the change of 'hon' to 'heyn' in IV11 calls for the omission of 'kai' before 'ouden'.' We suspect the owner's name 'R. A. Clarke' appears to be in another name leaving this first reader unfortunatlely anonymous noting only 'From Class Rev. August 1910 after the final notes. 'Despite its perennial popularity and the admiration of no less an authority than Goethe Daphnis and Chloe was largely ignored by classical scholars being considered trivial and/or pornographic until the 1960s when the ancient novel began to be viewed as a worthwhile object of study.' Introduction to the Loeb Classical Library edition. Deighton Bell and Co hardcover
