27048401Japan n.d. ca 1830-40's. Three prints two from an erotic book each in 2 parts: 20.5 x 14; 3rd is 19 x 14 cm. and is probably a later work from about the Meiji period or 1880's. The first two are slightly discoloredthe last one is clean. . . . THREE ORIGINAL COLOR WOODBLOCK EROTIC PRINTS . . . The first two prints are from what is probably the same erotic book Shunpon both show a couple engaged in love-making. Each has text and comments of the lovers while engaged in love-making. . One pair of pages are re-backed the other not they are from about the 1830-40's. . The third item is newer and quite clean. It shows a couple under a Kimono while the man caresses her vagina. This is probably a Meiji work from about 1870-80's. Its quite clean and bright with good image. . All are tipped on to a hand-made Washi paper backing sheet which is 17 x 20 cm. . Good examples from the "Shunga" erotic woodblock prints genre. . . unknown

A MOST SUPERB EROTIC EXAMPLE . . . COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINTED ALBUM . . CONTENTS The album contains two miniature polychrome woodcut print series. Each print is well executed with excellent registry and color care was taken to print them with the utmost quality and attention. This is not one of those quickly produced items lacking quality or refinement. Each print and series is a miniature work of erotic Ukiyo-e art. . The first series of prints are located on the verso or front pages of the album and consist of twelve prints. They show people from Edo period 1604-1868 and clearly from about 1840'S or so. Their hair style and Kimono fashion are of those times. The are done in the colors from that period and appear to have oxidation commensurate with about 140 years or so ago that would put their printing date at around 1868. in the Meiji era. There is very little background text at all but there are cartouches in several. Each print is clean and in excellent condition flawless. . The second series found on the recto or back side of the album and consists of twelve prints in all. The first three have a most unique and stunning silver background six with beige and 3 with indigo or "Aizuri" backgrounds. Each print is uniform within a circular cartouche for the most part and each print is exceptionally clean without flaw. . The work reflects people of the late Edo or early Meiji 1868-1912 period printed about 1869-1870's. . Number 2 shows a man with a huge phallus his hand caressing her vagina. . Number 3 shows the couple fully engaged in love making she is on top. . Number 4 shows the man on top while she locks her arms aroun him in an erotic embrace. . Number 5 is fascinating and RARE ! It shows a silken cord tied around his penis and she holds the cord so she can control its action. This sort of sexual "toy" is rarely shown in Japanese "Shunga" erotic prints. . Number 6 shows a male Buddhist priest or monk. He is fully engaged in licking his lover's vulva as she sucks his erect penis. . COMMENTARIES: The work begins with a couple about to make love he licks two fingers in readiness to insert his huge penis into her vulva she says "Its embarrassing to become like this." . He answers: "Why I am entering." She covers her mouth with here Kimono sleeve in shyness. She says: "Ready to put it in her mouth glug glug." He says "Its coming out to no end of joy." . Numbers 7-12 show couples engaged in love-making all with fascinating and very legible comments."Hayaku soko.iku ."Hurry right there I'm coming" and the like. . There is lots of "Chirishi" hand-made Washi toilet paper strewn around indicating lots of love-making and love juices freely flowing. This is a common erotic symbol and theme often found in Shunga. . RARITY: The work is RARE ! During our tenure of over fifty years we have seldom found Shunpon erotic woodcut books in such excellent and complete condition. . There are a number of very unique and unusual images found in this remarkable erotic album. . The work was clearly kept in the best of condition by some meticulous Japanese collector. Because the album consists of two distinct groups of similar period prints we can only assume it to be the property of a discreet collector from the period. The album's old silk covers and paper matches the print period. . THE GENRE OF JAPANESE EROTICA: This kind of book was banned from being published by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Also banned by the Meiji and Taisho governments. . Erotic woodblock prints "Shunga" & Shumpon erotic woodcut books were secretly drawn carved printed and published "underground." . It was an offence punishment was imprisonment and severe. All publishers had to submit their proposed publications to the government for the "Kiwame" or "Censor's seal" of approval. That "Kiwame" seal was carved into the block as visual proof of sanction. . The fact that all Japanese erotic works completely lacked official approval caused these kinds of books to be sold via a "black market." It is not surprising artists never signed their real name but commonly either did not sign or signed some laughable or ironic false name. . Regardless of any lack of meaningful signature many art historians and students of Japanese woodblock art can identify with an 'educated guess' the school style or the artist by stylistic analysis. Usually this was a giveaway ! . Many famous Ukiyo-e artists disliked being controlled by the government they continued to produce erotic prints and books for 'underground' publication regardless of the law as a means to supplement their meager income. . CONDITION & BINDING: The album is contained in an indigo-blue cloth Chitsu folding case ivory clasps and blank cover title slip. There is some of the old and usual minor fading to the Chitsu cloth. The overall size is 18 x 23.5 cm. . THE SILK COVERS: The green brocade-silk covered album is stunningly clean and bright. There is a small minor nick to the lower edge this does not encroach into the pages. . The album paper is very heavy bright clean and white with no foxing whatsoever. The 24 miniature woodcut prints are held in place by black paper mounting corners they can be removed at will and are not laid down. . Each color miniature woodblock print is exceptionally clean and bright with excellent color and registry. A couple have been restored mending a few old tiny worm holes. These are of minimal impact and are barely noticeable. The work is quite firm and solid. Our habit is to be a bit over critical about condition by and large this is an excellent item in aspects. The individual problem with 350 illustrations and 51 supplements. Volume one only. This is a very rare title. We have been unable to identify another copy offered for sale. Eduard Fuchs 1870 - 1940 was a writer and art collector. He combined his research writing and art collecting to produce a six-volume work Sittengeschichte Moral History and three volume Die Frau in der Karikatur The Woman in the Cartoon. Fuchs was a prolific collector of the artist Honore-Victorin Daumier 1808 - 1879 a French caricaturist cartoonist lithographer painter and sculptor and produced three volumes of his works. In addition to the vast Daumier collection Fuchs also owned a significant number of works by Max Slevogt. Fuchs was financially successful through the publication of his works whose popularity was due in part because of their content of erotic art. Fuchs and his Jewish second wife Margarete fled from Germany to Paris in February 1933 after coming under attack from the Nazi party. They were able to take only a few art works with them. Later that year Fuchs' collection which had remained in Germany was seized by the Nazis. The Nazis banned and burned Fuchs' books. Part of the art collection was returned to Fuchs' who remained in exile in Paris but his daughter from his first marriage was forced to auction off the collection between 1937-1938. There have been multiple projects to identify and recover the Fuchs' Collection. Only a small number of pieces have been recovered. This volume is a 4to size brown clothbound hardcover with brown titles on cover and spine. 439 toned pages. Profusely illustrated with black and white illustrations and a few color illustrations throughout. Many full page illustrations. Many very explicit erotic illustrations. Text is in German. This fragile book is shaken with loose stitches starting at the top and extending about three inches down and getting progressively tighter as they get to the bottom. Half inch tears to top of and bottom of sunned spine; worn corners large tears along left side of spine. Some full page illustrations have a blank tanned reverso and the pages following the tanned reversos are also tanned. Bookseller's penciled notation and creases to corner on fep; tiny spot on inside front cover with transfer to fep; we note at least two pages with finger marks in the margin and several pages with quarter inch to half inch tears in the margins and a stain in the top margin of page 7. Two pages in the preface - the last two pages before page one - are attached to each other but detached from the book and laid in. An attached ribbon bookmark is discolored towards the bottom. The third and final volume of lesbian writing legend Forrest's science fiction-fantasy trilogy that began in 1984 with the highly-praised "Daughters of a Coral Dawn" an exodus story of 4000 22nd century women who escaped a male-dominated tyrannical Earth to colonize the planet Maternas. Forrest followed with a second novel "Daughters of an Amber Noon" in 2002 which described the fate of the women who remained on Earth. The work was described as "a tour de force" by one reviewer. This third book is set on Maternas some 55 years later and describes the conflict between the original settlers and the first generation of Maternas-born women the first in the history of humanity with a legacy of ultimate freedom with a standard of conduct that has created a schism between older and younger generations. It is also a novel with considerable sexual content. First Printing First Edition. About 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches 197 pages including a brief author's biographical note. Black paper-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. The dustjacket shows a photographic design of sky clouds and distant hills in varying shades of green with a closer rocky landscape in shadow. Lettering is in green and white on front cover and spine with a single blurb for "Daughters of an Amber Noon" on the back panel. The dj's front flap describes the trilogy; the back flap is blank. There is no price or printing indicator on the jacket or the book. The copyright page notes the copyright in 2005 by Forrest followed by "Published by Alyson Books" with no date of issue. There is a single tiny dogearred page 117-118 o/w boards and text are clean complete and unmarked; binding tight and square not remaindered. The dustjacket shows very minimal surface and edgewear no tears no creasing or chipping no clipped corners. This copy appears to be an advance review or proof copy printed and bound before final details such as price were determined. In any case a hardcover copy is a rarity. An internet search at the time of this writing revealed only paperback copies of this 2005 edition or a later 2014 issue. Its scarcity alone should find it a place in a collection of Forrest's work along with the classic "Curious Wine" and the Kate Delafield mysteries. <br/> <br/> Alyson Books hardcover
