21004101Japan ca. 1915. A color silk painting 30 x 20 cm. very clean and solid on very fine silk finely drawn & executed in color gouache. RARE ORIGINAL PAINTED ART WORK . . . AN ORIGINAL FINELY HAND-PAINTED . . . COLOR EROTIC SCENE . . . TAISHO PERIOD 1912-1926 . This work shows a Buddhist monk wearing a common Kimono with shaved head disguised as a commoner. He secretly visits his lover and willing bed partner. She appears to be a house wife obviously of another man. Buddhist priests never married though they carried on an erotic life style. . She wears an elaborate silk Kimono with period coiffure. Spreading her legs keeping her knees back welcoming her lover. Her feet express ecstasy curled and pointing upwards clutching her lover tight and close to her. The monk holds her back firmly and with his right hand grasping her knee keeping them up and back thus forcing her wide open. . She is flushed with excitement showing a pink facial flush eyes closed in ecstasy. There is a gray Furoshiki large silk scarf tied into a bag above the woman. It most likely contains the monks Buddhist robes. He thus avoids the attention of others when walking the streets. . CONDITION: The painting is flawlessly executed. It's very clean and solid no stain or other issues of importance. . The work was probably mounted on a stiff album page in its past. It has been expertly 'lifted' and shows the usual but minimal remains at the right and left edges which does not encroach on the painting. What little remains is easily matted out. There are a few small verso mends using period Washi handmade Japanese paper which will not be very visible from the front when mounted on white paper. . A very nicely executed example with good colors ready for matting and framing . Color photos are posted to our website. . REFERENCE: . Erotic books prints & paintings were "suppressed" by the Tokugawa Shogunate therefore the majority of these kinds of erotic sold on the 'black market' and not distributed openly. . These erotic paintings drawings and woodblock printed Shunga books & art remained on the 'fringe.' The Shogunate enforced stiff penalties for artists block cutters publishers & printers of erotica. The Shogunate and its sensors would not approve or provide Kiwame censor's seal for this category of art or books. Items without Kiwame were subject to confiscation and anyone involved with the items when distributed to the general public were often harshly punished with imprisonment. These remained in 'private collections' and were strictly & discretely sold traded and distributed 'under the table' during the Edo period 1603-1867. . REFERENCES: . Some spotting and foxing some repaired tears.<br /> Erotic art - in letters and pictures - is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China where lovemaking was considered as a natural practice a sacred duty for both men and women. <br /><br />Albums with explicit drawings were often made for newly married couples as an instruction handbook. Here however the two scenes are rather unconventional illustrating polygamy practices that dominated aristocratic circles in the ancient Chinese society. The first watercolour shows not without a hint of humour two women engaged in a lovemaking game with a man. The second watercolour suggests the importance of self-pleasure for lonely females forced to live in a harem setting.<br /><br />Pieces like these provide a better understanding of Chinese culture that was largely suppressed in the wake of the Cultural Revolution in the mid-XX century. <br /><br /> [early 20th century]. unknown

With an illustration on title-page built up out of cast ornaments and 4 engraved plates. 2 184 pp. Second copy located of the first and only edition of "Confessions of a libertine" an 18th-century Dutch picaresque erotic novel in which the principal narrator Karel tells his fiancée Charlotte about his promiscuous past. The story starts with how his father met his mother Julia in the monastery where he grew up in. Julia was the 17/18-year-old daughter of the abbot who was "taught" all about sexuality by her father at an early age. The abbot passed away soon after Karel's father left for the army and was replaced by a 45-year old Franciscan monk who took turns with both mother and daughter. The situation became unsustainable because of the mother's jealousy of her daughter causing Julia to flee to her lover; Karel was conceived the following night. The life of Karel's parents gives a glimpse of the story that follows often taking place in a religious environment. The novel does not only detail the sexual encounters however but also provides arguments for free morals for instance pointing out that our ancestors just followed their nature without being obstructed by any morals. Novels like this have been neglected for about two hundred years and only in the last decennia interest has been revived.With bookplate and owner's inscription. The plate facing page 43 loosely inserted but otherwise in very good condition. Contemporary red morocco spines with raised bands gilt in compartments morocco labels lettered in gilt; some labels in contrasting colour.<br /> A lovely copy of this beautifully illustrated work finely bound in red morocco and including the charming 'figures libres' here bound in a supplementary volume. Cohen among others praised this great achievement of Gravelot Boucher Cochin and Eisen the best illustrators of the French 18th century. The edition not only shows 115 plates and frontispieces but also includes decorative engraved head- and tail-pieces in the best tradition of book illustration of its time. Framed. <br /> A series of six nude studies showing the same model posing in the photographer's studio. The style of the photographs which artistically combines high and low art allows to attribute the authorship to the Grundworth studio which is known to have been producing erotic postcards in Paris from the 1890s to the 1930s. <br /><br />Like most of the studios engaged in production of erotic photographs and postcards of the time little is known about it as despite the widespread circulation of these cards their production and distribution was illegal in France hence anonymity was essential. Given the time span and a number of different styles the name is unlikely to represent an individual photographer but more likely a group of photographers who were perhaps better known but wanted to hide their real identities.<br /> [Paris, c.1930s]. unknown

Contemporary marbled calf spines with raised bands gilt in compartments brown morocco labels lettered in gilt marbled endpapers red edges; a bit rubbed hinges a bit weak.<br /> Fine hand-coloured copy of this fully engraved work printed on papier verge de Hollande extra-fort - one of these 'rarissimes exemplaires dont les figures chefs-d'oeuvre de gravure ont ete peintes dans un coloris d'une beaute surprenante' Pia.<br /><br />Hancarville catalogued Sir William Hamilton's collection of ancient vases in Naples in 1764 from which it is likely he took some inspiration for these images showing a collection of classical erotica supposedly taken from actual medallions.
