33019001China n.d. ca 1920's. A set of three hand-painted color porcelain tiles each is ca. 10.3 x 25.8 cm. very clean excellent condition erotic color paintings. RARE UNIQUE ! . . . SOUTHERN-STYLE EXOTIC & EROTIC TITLE PAINTING SET . . . THREE HAND-PAINTED COLOR PORCELAIN TILES . This is a set of three hand-painted & colored tiles each fired and kiln reduced on white porcelain. Each is very thin ca. 3mm. thick. . These are done in the "Southern" style in a semi-tropical setting common of Fujian Guangdong and Guangxi provinces during the turn-of-the century perhaps about 1900-1920's by stylistic analysis. The semi-tropical plants place the setting in the south-eastern part of China. They were most likely used in a scholar's private garden decorating a private room or alcove specially used for love-making on a lazy afternoon. . THE EROTIC SUBJECT PAINTED ON THE PORCELAIN TILES: A matching group of three. . The First tile: This shows a lovely scene along the river in the background with a weeping willow tree in the garden. The couple are on a garden bench making love. The girl mounts her lover side- ways. She is clothed in a silk chest vest he wears nothing else. She has her "golden lotus" bound feet lifted off the ground for deeper penetration. The "loving couple" show pleasant faces as she clutches her hands with her arms holding him fast. He gropes her buttock for more control. . The second tile: Shows the "loving couple" in a pavilion with the garden adjacent. She sits on the bed with her chartreuse robe under her fully naked body. He stands and leans his penis into her while she pulls him close with her arms. She wraps her left leg around him while touching his side with her right "golden lotus" bound foot. Both her "golden lotus" bound feet are visible. She kisses his left cheek in a passionate embrace. There are stairs leading up to the scholar's private room for love-making with a nice "scholar's rock" in the foreground. . The third tile: The "loving couple" are in the garden with a circular gateway in the background along with a banana tree. The "loving couple" are engaged in love-making. She leans her left arm and leg against a porcelain stool while opening her legs giving him and easy entrance. He is on his knees inserting his penis into her. The couple are naked she is voluptuous with large breasts and looks as his "jade stick" with fascination He observes her "jade gate" while inserting his manhood into her. Her left "golden lotus" bound foot is visible. His pair of padded black shoes and a silk gown are on the grass with a lovely "scholar rock" in the foreground. . CHINESE FETISH OF BINDING WOMEN'S FEET: Each of the three nude women show "Golden Lotus" or bound feet wearing typical "boots." This is fetish is over 1000 years old in China and was abolished in 1948 with the communist takeover of China. . THE TECHNIQUE: Skillfully painted with a delicate hand lovely and excellent colors unsigned as usual. . CONDITION: The three tiles are in excellent condition a very tiny chip to the upper right corner of tile #3 else no defects. The verso backs are with the usual minor soil otherwise no issues. . Color photos are posted to our website. . REFERENCES: . BERTHOLET Ferry M.: CONCUBINES AND COURTESANS WOMEN IN CHINESE EROTIC ART. BEURDELEY Michel.: CHINESE EROTIC ART. Because of their 'pornographic' nature some or all of the plates are often not found. In our set three of the plates have been excised by a previous owner. "The genre of pornographic trial reports was fully developed in the late 1770s a fact which is borne out by the publication in seven volumes of a special collection of interesting cases Trials for Adultery: or the History of Divorces. The editor remarks to the reader that 'conjugal infidelity is become so general that it is hardly considered as criminal; especially in the fashionable world'. In view of the many erotic and obscene prints contained in the seven volumes the moral justifications offered in defence of the publication of the trial reports appear quite ridiculous if not hypocritical. Mostly erotic but occasionally also obscene such pictorial material now became a standard feature of trial reports for the rest of the century" Boucé. Printed for S. Bladon unknown

89219N.p. s.i.; Privately Published ca. 1930s. No. 141 of the numbered limited edition of 500 copies 300 for America 200 for England & the Continent. Undated facsimile reprint of the second Carrington edition 1898. Two octavo volumes; quarter-cloth of blue paper-covered boards; xl1-343; xxiv1-502pp. Boards slightly soiled with a rather conspicuous ring-stain to front cover of v.II; else just lightly worn and internally fine.

For "anthropology" read "prurient literature." For "untrodden" read "suspect." For "esoteric" read "naughty." For "customs" read "sex acts." For "French Army-Surgeon" read "Probably Charles Carrington." A classic Victorian erotic text masquerading in the form of a French anthropological treatise first brought out by Carrington in 1897 and here reprinted clandestinely lacking any genuine imprint so as to foil the censors. Lacking an imprint but almost certainly a production of one of the notorious New York bookleggers of the Thirties the most likely suspects being Esar Levine's Panurge Press or the closely associated Falstaff Press operated by Ben Rebhuhn. This was one of several Depression-era reprints. unknown
