He went to Paris in the early 1950s to paint and became involved with the group of expatriate American and a few British figures that included Christopher Logue Dan Jones Alexander Trocchi William Burroughs Iris Owens Richard Seaver who edited the Paris Review Merlin and other periodicals - and subliminally Samuel Beckett whose work some of them espoused. This group was eventually gathered up by Maurice Girodias to advise edit and write for his Olympic Press that published both erotica and literature and where possible a combination of the two in the puritanical days before the Obscene Publication Act 1959 in the UK made literary merit a sufficient counter-balance to allow publication of sexually explicit material. A painter of considerable prestige and some commercial success Rubington was commissioned by Girodias to write pornographic novels for him which he did under the penname of Akbar del Piombo. These were enormously successful with GIs visiting Paris and English readers seeking titillation. He also wrote erotic verse under the same name and illustrated many of these books. Often using scenes in Arab harems and exaggerated often extremely funny orgy scenes his work was characterised by much tongue-in-cheek humour and definite literary quality far beyond the demands of the publisher. There was also a strong streak of social and political satire in his work. Subjects he used included the drug scene war the art world and society generally. Rubington studied art at Yale before the war and in Paris after it. In the army during the war he worked in military intelligence as mapmaker and interpreter of aerial photographs. He was also a war artist. Rubington won the prestigious Prix de Rome as a painter and subsequently spent three years in that city. Other prizes and fellowships followed including the Guggenheim and Tiffany Awards and the Religous Arts Award the latter because of the religous painting he did for churches including a crucifixion for the Grace Cathedral of San Francisco. He was about to be honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters when he died. His work close to Surrealism and mostly representational is associated with American Expressionism of which he was an early exponent. It is usually infused with humor and an eye for the erotic often including portraits of personalities such as Orson Wells or others he wished to characture. His work hangs in major American museums' collections. His novels mostly published in the Fifties and the early Sixties included Who Pushed Paula Cosimo's Wife Skirts The Traveller's Companion and The Fetish Crowd all written as Akbar del Piombo. Under his own name he published also with Olympia Press the satirical collage novels Fuzz Against Junk and The Hero Maker using the same collage technique as Max Ernst in Une semaine de bonte. He was associated with various groups of painters in both France and the U.S. and took part in many group shows. His own one-man exhibitions were principally in Paris Boston and San Fransisco. In addition he illustrated many books and experimental films some of them leading to the work of Monty Python whose work is similar. His book Twelve Painters Twelve Poets was a successful attempt to bring the arts together---" 1722RO069. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Near Fine. The Olympia Press, Paris paperback

Neither these first issues nor the later re-issue titled Cupid Turned Spy appear in the modern auction record. An exceptionally rare work.

The widespread cultural assertion that men had control over their own fates led to equally widespread anxiety in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Despite a preponderance of laws and traditions that privileged men and sought to subjugate women and queer peoples sex outside the boundaries of marriage undermined those systems. Few figures encapsulate this truth better than the cuckold. "Cuckolds were seen as being unable to satisfy and control their wives; as literary tropes "they are more often than not the target of derision to both their peers on the stage and the audience the theatre nearly universally to be greeted with laughter as they follow a predictable path of failure in marriage" Corcoran. As much as these figures assisted male audience members in projecting their fears onto allegedly weaker men they signify that complete control over women marriages and lines of inheritance isn't possible. The denial of women's agency does not equate the complete absence of women's agency.

Women's sexual agency had become highly visible in key sectors of London society by the eighteenth century thanks in part to the rise of a famed generation of courtesans often called the "demi-monde" who dominated not only their own brothels and houses but also theatres opera houses and the court itself. Sex work more generally had become extremely common with studies estimating that anywhere from 8600 to 80000 citizens of the city were engaged in some level of the sex trade Rogers. In this atmosphere depictions of the cuckold shifted in some erotic works. Rather than symbolizing men's sexual failures the cuckold's acceptance of his position acknowledged and at times even celebrated women's sexual autonomy. If being cuckolded was inevitable as a result of women's equal participation in sexual desire then fault might not lie with the cuckold. Indeed being a cuckold may even have benefits when more conservative social judgment is set aside.

Authored by the pseudonymous "Cornuto" -- a Latin joke naming the author after the cuckold's "horn" -- Cuckoldom Triumphant is dedicated to the gentry noting "the amazing encrease of antlers of late among the nobility whose customs the common people are so fond of copying which gives me the pleasing promise of cuckoldom's becoming universal." Indeed the author notes cuckoldom is inevitable and each must choose his own reaction to the state. To that end "this work is intended to comfort the afflicted and confirm the contented among those who are married as well as prepare the unmarried for the happy state of cuckoldom." In what follows the author provides readers with a sensational erotic story following the awakening of Mrs. Latitat to the pleasures of extramarital sexuality as well as her husband's transformation from jealous resistance to acceptance and contentment within a more peaceful marital state.

ESTC T62268 T226126 for the J. 2005005595Los Angeles: Alyson Books 2005. First Edition. . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. The third and final volume of lesbian writing legend Forrest's science fiction-fantasy trilogy that began in 1984 with the highly-praised "Daughters of a Coral Dawn" an exodus story of 4000 22nd century women who escaped a male-dominated tyrannical Earth to colonize the planet Maternas. Forrest followed with a second novel "Daughters of an Amber Noon" in 2002 which described the fate of the women who remained on Earth. The work was described as "a tour de force" by one reviewer. This third book is set on Maternas some 55 years later and describes the conflict between the original settlers and the first generation of Maternas-born women the first in the history of humanity with a legacy of ultimate freedom with a standard of conduct that has created a schism between older and younger generations. It is also a novel with considerable sexual content. First Printing First Edition. About 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches 197 pages including a brief author's biographical note. Black paper-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. The dustjacket shows a photographic design of sky clouds and distant hills in varying shades of green with a closer rocky landscape in shadow. Lettering is in green and white on front cover and spine with a single blurb for "Daughters of an Amber Noon" on the back panel. The dj's front flap describes the trilogy; the back flap is blank. There is no price or printing indicator on the jacket or the book. The copyright page notes the copyright in 2005 by Forrest followed by "Published by Alyson Books" with no date of issue. There is a single tiny dogearred page 117-118 o/w boards and text are clean complete and unmarked; binding tight and square not remaindered. The dustjacket shows very minimal surface and edgewear no tears no creasing or chipping no clipped corners. This copy appears to be an advance review or proof copy printed and bound before final details such as price were determined. In any case a hardcover copy is a rarity. An internet search at the time of this writing revealed only paperback copies of this 2005 edition or a later 2014 issue. Its scarcity alone should find it a place in a collection of Forrest's work along with the classic "Curious Wine" and the Kate Delafield mysteries.

Alyson Books hardcover
1770ACGGGLIF1Z51The Netherlands 1770. 8vo. Contemporary red half roan sheepskin gold-tooled spine. With an illustration on title-page built up out of cast ornaments and 4 engraved plates. 2 184 pp. Second copy located of the first and only edition of "Confessions of a libertine" an 18th-century Dutch picaresque erotic novel in which the principal narrator Karel tells his fiancée Charlotte about his promiscuous past. The story starts with how his father met his mother Julia in the monastery where he grew up in. Julia was the 17/18-year-old daughter of the abbot who was "taught" all about sexuality by her father at an early age. The abbot passed away soon after Karel's father left for the army and was replaced by a 45-year old Franciscan monk who took turns with both mother and daughter. The situation became unsustainable because of the mother's jealousy of her daughter causing Julia to flee to her lover; Karel was conceived the following night. The life of Karel's parents gives a glimpse of the story that follows often taking place in a religious environment. The novel does not only detail the sexual encounters however but also provides arguments for free morals for instance pointing out that our ancestors just followed their nature without being obstructed by any morals. Novels like this have been neglected for about two hundred years and only in the last decennia interest has been revived. With bookplate and owner's inscription. For a time his patron was Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and he mocked Popes and would be popes but in time he settled in Venice - the Anti-Rome. Ariosto called him "the scourge of Princes". He is remembered most for his satires and his letters which detail conversations with both the great names of the day as well as regular folk both women and men. His ability to manipulate the reader of his letters - which were carefully chosen and probably always meant for publication - by constructing a compelling narrative with himself as central protagonist - changed epistolary collections forever.
