A very scarce volume in which scenes from the life of Martin Luther are depicted in lithographs after the paintings of Pierre-Antoine Labouchere. The first edition of this very scarce work.Illustrated with a chromolithographic title page and twelve lithographic plates. These plates are produced by Day & Son 'lithographer to the Queen' after the work of French historical painter Pierre-Antoine Labouchere.The plates are accompanied by letterpress descriptions by the Swiss Protestant minister and historian of the Reformation Jean-Henri Merle d'Aubigne. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Tide marks to head of front board. Joints starting with boards tender. Cloth at back strip head detaching. Lacking free endpapers. Internally binding failed due to gutta percha. Small closed tears and chipping to page perimeters. Pages generally bright with foxing to title page and spotting throughout. Signed ‘Merle d’Aubigné’ and addressed ‘A Miss Caroline Thompson / Bedford’ at foot of second page. Begins by stating that his ‘livre sur la Réformation est peu de chose’. What is important is how it shows that God transforms hearts ‘et plusieurs personnes de divers pays m’ont écrit: “En voyant comment Luther trouva Christ par la bonté de Dieu je l’ai trouvé moi même!â€â€™ He continues with reference to Claudine Levet and Calvin. 2 December 1866. 174927 February 1869. 2pp. 8vo. On bifolium. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. Written in a difficult hand. Dated 'M<> 7 Fevr 69'. Addressed to 'Monsieur & Mes colleguès'. He writes regarding the 'Commission de la Bibliothèque' and their direction that he send copies of their prospectus to 'M le <> Hofman à Berlin' with reference to 'Mr B<arde>'. The sepia portrait photograph of d'Aubigné is 9 x 5.5 cm and appears to have been cut down but is otherwise in good condition. It is a head-and-shoulders studio shot showing the historian in wing-collar shirt staring to the left from under his bushy eyebrows. An engraving of the image was made and is widely-known but other copies of the original photograph have not been traced. 7 February 1869. unknown
