Doctor [Oliver] Goldsmith (1728-1774) wrote Retaliation in 1774, responding to a proposal by David Garrick, that they compare their skill at epigrams by writing each other's epitaph. Goldsmith decided to write Garrick's epitaph along with those of ten others he imagined gathered about a table, including himself. but Death took the pen from Goldsmith's hand before he could write his own epitaph. David Garrick (1717-1779) was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager, producer and social butterfly, who influenced nearly all aspects of theatrical practice throughout the 18th century. He and was an active figure in the circle gathered about his friend of Dr. Samuel Johnson. W37
