Light green boards very clean with no color fade. 1/2" closed tear at base of spine only significant flaw. Tips sharp. Vintage bookplate on front pastedown but covered completely by front flap of jacket. No other markings. Tight and definitely square. First state jacket with photo of Author on rear panel. Price intact jacket has shallow chipping at spine ends but well preserved and clean. Presents well. Basis for film that starred James Dean. In mylar. . . First American Edition. Cloth. "First published" statement on the copyright page and date on the title page. Cloth sunned along the edges and spine but a very good copy. The first state dustwrapper has the price of $4.50 on the flap and Steinbeck's portrait on the rear panel. The top inch of the spine and the bottom edge have been professionally restored giving a near fine appearance with only light age toning especially to the spine. The rear free endpaper and pastedown have penciled notes made by a former owner apparently references to important passages in the book. .<br /> <p>. The Viking Press hardcover

195216551New York: Viking Press 1952. First edition first printing. Published by the Viking Press in New York 1952. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper with the author's portrait to the rear and no photo credit has some mild chipping to the top edge and some rubbing at the hinge. There is a mild tear to the tail of the spine which could be seamlessly repaired. The dust wrapper is unrestored. In this instance it has not been price clipped and shows the original $4.50 net price. There is slight spotting and handling marks. This aside the wrapper is bright and highly presentable. The boards are free from notable chips and marks with typical light bumping to the spine tips. This copy is free from previous owner's ink and correctly shows the word "bite" present on page 281 line 38. The text blocks are mostly immaculate but with a small darkened area to the bottom right-hand corner. Overall this is a near fine copy of a fine and increasingly scarce title. The work is regarded by many to be Steinbeck's most ambitious novel and by Steinbeck himself to be his magnum opus. Steinbeck stated about East of Eden: "It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years" and later said: "I think everything else I have written has been in a sense practice for this."
