196615900JNew York 1966. Original John Steinbeck engraved printed calling card 2 1/4 by 1 3/4 inches in very good condition with evidence of a former paperclip. This card was attached to a full page clipping which prints a John Steinbeck letter from the April 30 1966 issue of Newsday which Steinbeck sent to his friend Jack Valenti. The page clipping has tears and is fragile. The Steinbeck letter text deals with his opinions on assorted aspects of America. Accompanied by a COA from the Jack Valenti estate. Jack Valenti 1921-2007 is best known in his role as President of the Motion Picture Association of America. During his 38 year position in the MPAA Valenti created the MPAA film rating system which is still used today. Previously he had been a right hand man to President Lyndon Johnson. In 1963 Valenti was in the John F. Kennedy motorcade in Dallas and he is seen in the famous photograph of Lyndon Johnson being sworn in as President on Air Force One. Valenti flew back to Washington with Johnson and literally lived in the White House for two months helping Johnson take the reins of the presidency. Hollywood mogul and Democratic fundraiser Lew Wasserman pressured Lyndon Johnson to let Valenti leave in 1966 to run the MPAA. A striking and articulate man who easily made friends Valenti became a figure of considerable influence in both Hollywood and Washington. Few people have known as many famous and powerful people as Valenti. unknown books

196158176NY: Viking 1961. First Trade Edition. 8vo pp. 311. A VG copy in little rubbed dj. priced at $4.50 Goldstone & Payne A38b. From the jacket "This new novel will probably surprise even his Steinbeck's warmest admirers. Instead of being set in the Far West the scene of most of his books this one takes place on the Northeastern sea board; instead of depicting simple uneducated people this deals chiefly with a well-born well-to-do society with long traditions behind it. But it deals with it in a way that reveals the continuity within Steinbeck's diversity; through the lives of one family and their friends he has taken that society apart shown its frightening shams and shortcomings and measured it against true human decency. The result is a novel in its very dfferent way as powerful as anything he has done and certain to stand as a major work in the Steinbeck canon Viking unknown books

1948WRCLIT70656New York: Bantam Books 1948. Vintage poster approximately 28" x 22". A bit of minor discoloration at top right corner some unfortunate tape to verso to remedy an 8" tear from the bottom edge and a 2½" tear at upper right corner. Just good but the colors bright and fresh. An uncommon promotional poster for the first Bantam Books paperback edition issued to coincide with the release of the motion picture directed by Emilio Fernández and starring Pedro Armendariz and Maria Elena Marques. The poster reproduces the front wrapper of the paperback against a background of images of Armendariz and Marques from the film. The potential proper remedies for rendering this poster archivally and aesthetically pleasing are varied and we will leave the specific path to pursue a personal decision for the buyer.
