"With Your Wings" Steinbeck Story of a Black Pilot. Evocative Steinbeck story or "mood piece" imagining a decorated black pilot returning to his hometown cheered by his neighbors and welcomed by his father in the house he grew up in with the remark: "Son - every black man in the world is going to fly with your wings."<br/><br/>In his cover letter to his friend Burgess Meredith who served in the Air Force during the war he writes:<br/><br/>"DEAR BUZZY:<br/><br/> A different version of the following was done for overseas broadcast to the troops by O.W.I. This is a different version. I don't know whether you would like to use it or not. It has an odd length. I might be a good idea to use it in some one of your shows. If you want it you are quite welcome to it. It was written against a background of music imagined music I mean. Should you desire to use it I think the story itself will suggest the music. Let me suggest however that the music be soft sustained and all of one piece and that it do not attempt to be directly descriptive of the piece but rather of the spirit of the piece. I would suggest that you yourself read it using the beautiful technique you used in "The Forgotten Village" . the soft reading that seems not to be reading at all. This is pure mood and would have to be delivered like soft music. Anyway there it is and you're welcome to it - if you want it."<br/><br/>Office of War Information for which Steinbeck worked during the WW II. <br/><br/>UNPUBLISHED until 2014 when the revived Strand Magazine published a version based upon a different typescript from the Steinbeck papers at HRC; a unique draft or variant copy of this moving war-time sketch.<br/><br/>From the Estate of BURGESS MEREDITH. unknown books
1941123887New York: The Viking Press 1941. First edition of this classic work. Octavo original cloth cartographic endpapers. Presentation copy inscribed by John Steinbeck on the title page. Some offsetting to the half-title page near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by W.V. Eckhardt. The collaboration of two friends--one a novelist one a marine biologist--produced a volume in which fascinating popular science is woven into a narrative of man's dreams his ideals and his accomplishments through the centuries. Sea of Cortez is one of those rare books that are all things to all readers. Actually the record of a brief collecting expedition in the lonely Gulf of California it will be science to the scientist philosophy to the philosopher and to the average man an adventure in living and thinking. The teeming and wildly competitive world of the sand flats is seen in terms of history politics ethics and sociology; a starfish is important not only because it is a new variety but because it is essential to the delicate balance of the whole region in which it is found. Steinbeck and Ricketts are the opposite of "pure" scientists: it is not only their work that fascinates them but the complicated and enormously exciting implications of that work. 194115604JLos Gatos California: 1 page quarto 8 1/2 by 14 inches early 1941. Original excellent content letter signed “John†written in blue ink on yellow lined foolscap paper. Steinbeck writes to Daniel James who had just finished his work as one of the assistant directors to Charles Chaplin on his film classic The Great Dictator. Steinbeck has just returned home from being in Hollywood as well where he was working on his Mexican documentary film The Forgotten Village. “.I just got back from your part of the country to find your letter. Didn’t see anyone down there. Went from the lab to my apartment back and forth and came home the moment I was finished. I didn’t have anything to do with picking a composer. Hans Eisler wrote the music after Sillvestre Revueltas died. I haven’t even heard it. I think the film is pretty good but of course can’t tell until it is all finished and music and words set on the film. This is a crazy time and I feel pretty much the same. Too much rather than too little information. And it doesn’t seem to mirror the total of our knowledge a bit. Are you still working for Charley Chaplin He has been away a long time now. And I have heard one group say The Great Dictator is a failure and another that it is a great success. Which do you think is true. I’m going to work now on the Gulf book Sea of Cortez. Hope to have it ready by summer. It is going to be very hard work but of a kind I like and trust particularly now precise work in which the information does not pass through any censorship bureau.Haven’t been to Monterey for quite a while but Carol Steinbeck has. Tal is going to have a baby Francis and Elaine are reported well and Ed Ricketts is Ed.†Fine condition. 1 page, quarto, 8 1/2 by 14 inches unknown books

Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "John Steinbeck With love from Isak Dinesen New York 29.1.1959." In 1959 Dinesen had been invited by the Ford Foundation to travel to the United States to read and discuss her work as part of a film series on "the world's greatest living writers." Very good in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A remarkable association linking these two giants of twentieth century literature.
