First edition first state not book club hardcover and dust jacket in VG condition: slightest handling of the hardcover with a dated 9/1/54 gift inscription on the front endpaper otherwise unmarked. The dust jacket is lightly worn at the spine ends and sides with a few tiny tears at the ends slightest wear elsewhere three very tiny spots on the front and is protected by a clear removeable cover. The points of issue: red upper page edges light olive-beige cloth with red lettering and blue birds title page with seven red lines and red title printers name under the colophon on the copyright page "First published by The Viking Press in June 1954" no subsequent printings DJ back panel has facsimile John Steinbeck signature and photographer's name under the photograph nothing further. $3.50 price on DJ no book club emboss/mark on the back panel of the hardcover.
