19362240First Covici Friede Edition in First state dust jacket with no mention of "Of Mice and Men" with the original Covici Friede title blacked out and the $2.50 price intact on the front flap. A Near Fine book in a Very Good or better dust jacket. Also called the 2nd Edition of the book having originally been published by McBride in 1929; however this edition reportedly includes sheets from that first edition so some call this 1st Edition 2nd State; this is the author's first published novel. Inscribed and SIGNED by the author on the title page to a previous owner who also put his name and address discreetly underneath the front flap. This copy is in near fine condition with a square tight binding gold lettering over clean maroon boards and clean white pages with only a hint of foxing throughout; the book does show some light rubbing and sunning to the top board edges and a mild gutter exposure to the first few pages else fine. Housed in a clean and bright very good or better dust jacket that shows some moderate sunning to the spine mild rubbing and chipping to the spine ends edges and corners and a couple of short closed tears to the top of the front and back panels. Overall a very handsome and presentable copy of the book with a very clean and legible signature from Steinbeck with the added provenance of the original signee's name written in. An important addition to the Steinbeck library or the 20th century literature collection. Not remaindered not price clipped not ex-library; in a protective Mylar cover and will ship in a sturdy box. 193541022New York: Covici Friede Publishers 1935. First printing. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket. First edition of this oft-comical tale of post-World War I Monterey following the exploits of a wine-loving and vaguely Arthurian group of paisanos a beautiful copy in the scarce original dust jacket. The lighthearted tone of TORTILLA FLAT lifted the spirits of Americans during the Great Depression for whom "reading and the movies were escape. escape from grinding poverty escape from worrying about how to pay the rent escape from worrying about how to find a job" San Jose. Danny and his round table of friends are rarely concerned with any of those issues as they meander through life in Monterey undeniably poor but not experiencing the tragedy of poverty in the same way as many of Steinbeck's later characters. Steinbeck even drew joy from writing the work: "it is light and I think amusing. I don't care whether it amounts to anything. I am enjoying it and I need something to help me over this last ditch" Steinbeck and Wallsten.
TORTILLA FLAT did of course amount to something earning the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal and a mention in the justification for Steinbeck's 1962 Nobel Prize. It was also made into a 1942 film starring Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr and was one of the top box office grossers of the year.
This first edition is a crystallization of the beginning of Steinbeck's career before his works were required reading in classrooms across America. With Ruth Gannett's illustrations nestled throughout the text TORTILLA FLAT is a refreshingly light title in a broad oeuvre. 7.5'' x 5''. Original tan cloth binding with blue spine lettering. Original unclipped $2.50 pictorial dust jacket in blue and black. Blue topstain. Fore-edge machine deckle. Illustrated throughout in black and white. 318 pages. Housed in custom blue leather-backed clamshell box. Jacket with some edgewear mild chipping to spine ends; spine sunned. Binding corners and spine ends lightly bumped topstain a bit faded; tiny creases to lower margins of pages 316-318. A clean sound copy. Covici Friede Publishers unknown

194115604JLos Gatos California: 1 page quarto 8 1/2 by 14 inches early 1941. Original excellent content letter signed “John†written in blue ink on yellow lined foolscap paper. Steinbeck writes to Daniel James who had just finished his work as one of the assistant directors to Charles Chaplin on his film classic The Great Dictator. Steinbeck has just returned home from being in Hollywood as well where he was working on his Mexican documentary film The Forgotten Village. “.I just got back from your part of the country to find your letter. Didn’t see anyone down there. Went from the lab to my apartment back and forth and came home the moment I was finished. I didn’t have anything to do with picking a composer. Hans Eisler wrote the music after Sillvestre Revueltas died. I haven’t even heard it. I think the film is pretty good but of course can’t tell until it is all finished and music and words set on the film. This is a crazy time and I feel pretty much the same. Too much rather than too little information. And it doesn’t seem to mirror the total of our knowledge a bit. Are you still working for Charley Chaplin He has been away a long time now. And I have heard one group say The Great Dictator is a failure and another that it is a great success. Which do you think is true. I’m going to work now on the Gulf book Sea of Cortez. Hope to have it ready by summer. It is going to be very hard work but of a kind I like and trust particularly now precise work in which the information does not pass through any censorship bureau.Haven’t been to Monterey for quite a while but Carol Steinbeck has. Tal is going to have a baby Francis and Elaine are reported well and Ed Ricketts is Ed.†Fine condition. 1 page, quarto, 8 1/2 by 14 inches unknown books

If you want it you are quite welcome to it. It was written against a background of music imagined music I mean. Should you desire to use it I think the story itself will suggest the music. Let me suggest however that the music be soft sustained and all of one piece and that it do not attempt to be directly descriptive of the piece but rather of the spirit of the piece. I would suggest that you yourself read it using the beautiful technique you used in "The Forgotten Village" . the soft reading that seems not to be reading at all. 1941123887New York: The Viking Press 1941. First edition of this classic work. Octavo original cloth cartographic endpapers. Presentation copy inscribed by John Steinbeck on the title page. Some offsetting to the half-title page near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by W.V. Eckhardt. The collaboration of two friends--one a novelist one a marine biologist--produced a volume in which fascinating popular science is woven into a narrative of man's dreams his ideals and his accomplishments through the centuries. Sea of Cortez is one of those rare books that are all things to all readers. Actually the record of a brief collecting expedition in the lonely Gulf of California it will be science to the scientist philosophy to the philosopher and to the average man an adventure in living and thinking. The teeming and wildly competitive world of the sand flats is seen in terms of history politics ethics and sociology; a starfish is important not only because it is a new variety but because it is essential to the delicate balance of the whole region in which it is found. Steinbeck and Ricketts are the opposite of "pure" scientists: it is not only their work that fascinates them but the complicated and enormously exciting implications of that work.
