195216551New York: Viking Press 1952. First edition first printing. Published by the Viking Press in New York 1952. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper with the author's portrait to the rear and no photo credit has some mild chipping to the top edge and some rubbing at the hinge. There is a mild tear to the tail of the spine which could be seamlessly repaired. The dust wrapper is unrestored. In this instance it has not been price clipped and shows the original $4.50 net price. There is slight spotting and handling marks. This aside the wrapper is bright and highly presentable. The boards are free from notable chips and marks with typical light bumping to the spine tips. This copy is free from previous owner's ink and correctly shows the word "bite" present on page 281 line 38. The text blocks are mostly immaculate but with a small darkened area to the bottom right-hand corner. Overall this is a near fine copy of a fine and increasingly scarce title. The work is regarded by many to be Steinbeck's most ambitious novel and by Steinbeck himself to be his magnum opus. Steinbeck stated about East of Eden: "It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years" and later said: "I think everything else I have written has been in a sense practice for this." 193608753CUP OF GOLD Mcbride 1929 first printing of the Covici Friede binding in burgundy cloth edges of spine extremities and edge of front cover lightened else just about fine in vg/near fine first state of Covici Friede dust-wrapper with the publishers name blocked out and then reprinted and spelled correctly on the dust-wrapper spine and WITHOUT mention of OF MICE AND MEN on the front dust-wrapper panel which was duh published a year later in 1937 making any who list this title which has this work printed on the front dust-wrapper panel and then adjudicating it as the correct first state dust-wrapper a most dubious scholar and with a small chip missing from the head of the dust-wrapper spine slight fraying to the base of the dust-wrapper spine and some light dust-soil to the rear dust-wrapper panel. Actually a very nice copy of this the second issue of the first edition sheets of the authors first book bound in maroon cloth with the McBride colophon on the last page of text and released here in 1936. Not to be confused with the very common later edition NOT second issue in blue cloth without the McBride colophon on the last page of text . Covici Friede hardcover
