First Printing First Issue Dust Jacket Very near fine in decorated medium brown cloth covered boards with a gilt on black title block on the spine and a black sketch on the front board. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is only slightly rubbed. In a very good price clipped but replaced dust jacket with shallow chipping to the ends of the spine area shallow chips to the fore corners of the front panel over the tips of the boards rubbing to the fold to the front flap and two short 1/4 inch closed tears to the upper edge of the rear panel. Illustrated with drawings by Jose Clemente Orozco. This is the first state dust jacket with Steinbeck looking to his left on the rear panel. The Viking Press hardcover

In a very good clipped wrapper with a little rubbing and wear to the spine tips and corners. A much better copy than usually found. The novel follows the Joad family as they flee the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma and travel to California seeking work and dignity. Along the way they face poverty exploitation and loss yet also moments of solidarity and resilience. Through their journey Steinbeck condemns economic injustice and dehumanising capitalism while celebrating collective strength. The novel combines social protest with intimate family drama becoming a powerful portrait of endurance during the Great Depression. Heinemann unknown

A near fine copy the binding square and firm the spine tips and board corners lightly rubbed the cloth and gilt fresh. There are three small spots to the bottom edge of the closed text-block and one to the top the contents are otherwise clean throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper that remains bright and without loss or tears. Not price clipped 8s 6d on the front flap. A very attractive example. An enduring modern classic Steinbeck's Great American Novel 'The Grapes of Wrath' follows a struggling farming family as they flee the Dust Bowl for California during the Great Depression. It won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and was cited by the Nobel committee as one of the factors in their deciding to award Steinbeck with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. The novel was adapted into the 1940 Academy Award winning film of the same name directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell. Front pastedown has a tiny PO's stamp at top. Text has a dent/warp to the lower right corners and a very faint water stain there but only visible on pgs 379-415. Text unmarked. Faint water stain to lower outer text edge by that corner. DJ is GOOD ; not clipped $4.50 front has two teensy spots otherwise the DJ is very clean. Flaps very clean. Corners and spine ends have wear and chips no chip deeper than 1/4 in. at spine ends. Rear flap fold has three small chips. Rear lower edge has some mild warping probably from water.
