1945redpony
New York: Viking Press 1945. Stated "Illustrated Edition First Published 1945" on the copyright verso. Classic mid-century illustrated edition of Steinbeck's beloved cycle of stories about young Jody Tiflin his family and life on a California ranch here presented with full-page illustrations and issued in a publisher's slipcase.

The book itself is in Good condition: cloth shows moderate rubbing and handling but the binding remains sound and the pages are clean and legible with no major markings or defects noted. The original slipcase is present and structurally intact but only Fair: staining rubbing and general wear to panels and edges typical of a slipcase that has done its job over many decades. Still protects the book and displays reasonably on the shelf.

A solid presentable copy of the Viking illustrated edition of The Red Pony increasingly scarce with the original slipcase still present.
Viking Press hardcover
194510521
The Viking Press New York 1945. First illustrated Trade Edtion 1st printing noted for the Wesley Dennis illustrations. NF/NF Slipcase. Book beige cloth binding and a blue panel on the spine with pastedown pony. Slipcase one corner bumped. The "War Production Board" Statement: This is a crucial "point." Because WWII was ending in 1945 paper was rationed. Viking Press included this disclaimer only in the initial printings. Later reprints once paper restrictions lifted removed this text. "Illustrated Edition First Published in 1945": This explicitly identifies it as the first run of this specific version. The Printer Credit: Listing Rogers-Kellogg-Stillson as the printer for the offset lithography is correct for the first state of this edition. The Copyright Dates: Having 1937/1938 for the text and 1945 for the illustrations is exactly what you want to see. The True first edition originally published in 1937 by Covici Friede.
The Viking Press hardcover
