Quarto two volumes including a book of early Russian Orthodox paintings with many in color and a folio of loose plates featuring artwork from the Hermitage Museum. From the library of John Steinbeck. In very good condition. Steinbeck made his first of many trips to the Soviet Union in 1947 with photographer Robert Capa. They visited Moscow Kiev Tbilisi Batumi and Stalingrad and were some of the first Americans to visit many parts of the USSR since the communist revolution. Steinbeck's 1948 book about their experiences A Russian Journal was illustrated with Capa's photos. In 1948 the year the book was published Steinbeck was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Various unknown books

Evocative Steinbeck story or "mood piece" imagining a decorated black pilot returning to his hometown cheered by his neighbors and welcomed by his father in the house he grew up in with the remark: "Son - every black man in the world is going to fly with your wings."<br/><br/>In his cover letter to his friend Burgess Meredith who served in the Air Force during the war he writes:<br/><br/>"DEAR BUZZY:<br/><br/> A different version of the following was done for overseas broadcast to the troops by O.W.I. This is a different version. I don't know whether you would like to use it or not. It has an odd length. I might be a good idea to use it in some one of your shows. If you want it you are quite welcome to it. It was written against a background of music imagined music I mean. Should you desire to use it I think the story itself will suggest the music. Let me suggest however that the music be soft sustained and all of one piece and that it do not attempt to be directly descriptive of the piece but rather of the spirit of the piece. I would suggest that you yourself read it using the beautiful technique you used in "The Forgotten Village" . the soft reading that seems not to be reading at all. This is pure mood and would have to be delivered like soft music. JD30871NY 1963 first edition. <br/><br/> This is a 10-page legal contract between Broadway producer David Merrick and Steinbeck as represented by his agent Annie Laurie Williams allowing Merrick to turn Steinbeck's screenplay for the film Viva Zapata 1952 into a Broadway musical the first six pages are comprised of original typescript plus typed emendations and carbon emendations all of which are initialed by Merrick in the margins 25 times pages 8-10 are carbon typescript page 8 is signed originally by Merrick in full who paid Steinbeck $1000 for this option page 9 is titled Schedule "A" and is a carbon typescript initialed by Merrick page 10 is also a carbon of a letter from Steinbeck to Merrick in which Steinbeck agrees to have his name shown 25% less in size to those who would author the musical this page although a carbon is originally dated Jan. 11 1963 and is signed originally by Steinbeck this musical project was never made this item was not in the Adrian H. Goldstone collection not recorded by Goldstone & Payne or Morrow now housed in a cloth folder. Sheets are stapled in the upper left-hand corner essentially fine. hardcover books
