66Covici Friedi. Second Edition First Printing. Publisher's Blue Boards Blind Stamped Gilt Decorations and Lettering to Spine. Very Good/Good. A Very Good or Better Second Edition in a Good Pictorial Dust Jacket. Jacket missing paper along tail of spine and front joint seen in photos. While the first edition of Cup of Gold published by McBride saw little success the Covici edition sold quite well. Covici utilized the photo plates from the original McBride edition adding their own introduction and a fresh title page. The Second printing saw the addition of "Author of Of Mice and Men" to the front of the dust jacket and the removal of the McBride logo previously found on page 269. 12mo. 269pp. Covici Friedi unknown
1936014405New York: Covici Friede 1936. 1st Edition second issue. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition second issue in maroon cloth with the scarce earliest dust jacket for this edition lacking any mention of "Of Mice and Men" and with the publisher's misspelled name blacked out on spine with correct spelling appearing above it and $2.50 original price on the front flap. In the Goldstone bibliography this edition was assumed to consist of unsold remainder sheets of the 1929 first edition likely because the McBride bell logo appears on the final page. Therefore this scarce edition is usually referred to as the "first edition second issue." However it seems more likely that Covici simply reproduced the McBride logo as an oversight before correcting their error on all subsequent editions. Either way whether a 'first second issue" or simple the second edition a scarce and desirable book. Very slight fading to maroon cloth former own name in pencil on the endpaper else a near fine book in jacket with only minor wear.

Covici Friede hardcover

Original publisher's top edge blue stain has faded else textblock is very good. A much better copy that usually seen at this price level but a repaired copy. No signatures or bookplate. Front flap of the original dust jacket loosely set in. Steinbeck's scarce first book.

McBride` hardcover

06592New York: Covici Friede 1936. Steinbeck's First Book - The Buccaneer Romance of Henry Morgan
Cup of Gold - First Covici Friede Edition Using McBride Sheets

STEINBECK John. Cup of Gold. A Life of Sir Henry Morgan Buccaneer with Occasional Reference to History. New York: Covici Friede 1936.

First Covici Friede edition after the McBride first edition of 1929.

Octavo 7 7/16 x 5 1/8 inches; 188 x 130 mm. viii 269 3 blank pp.

Publisher's maroon cloth spine lettered in gilt top edge stained blue others uncut. Very slight fading 1/16 inch at lower spine and top edges otherwise fine. In the original first-issue color pictorial dust jacket with only minimal rubbing to extremities. Overall a superb example.

Originally published in 1929 Cup of Gold was Steinbeck's first book - a romantic and imaginative re-creation of the life of the Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan. Though quite different in tone from the social realism that would later define his reputation the novel reveals early evidence of Steinbeck's narrative power and his fascination with myth ambition and the human condition.

This 1936 Covici Friede issue represents the first reappearance of the work following Steinbeck's growing success in the mid-1930s. The edition is bibliographically significant: it utilizes unsold sheets of the original 1929 Robert M. McBride edition newly issued with a Covici Friede title-page and binding. In effect Covici Friede acquired the remaining McBride stock and reissued it under their own imprint. When these sheets were exhausted later printings were produced independently by Covici Friede typically in blue cloth.

As such this edition occupies an important transitional position between the exceedingly rare McBride first issue and the later more common reprints. Copies in such fresh condition particularly with the fragile and vividly illustrated dust jacket intact are increasingly scarce.

A particularly attractive and bibliographically interesting example of Steinbeck's elusive first book.

Goldstone & Payne A1c. 1936012361New York: Covici Friede / Sun Dial Press 1936. 1st Edition second issue. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Very good in maroon cloth with spine unfaded except at the very tips. Top edge blue stain faded. Goldstone and Payne call this the "first edition second issue" but is more properly simply the second edition. This maroon cloth issue retains the McBride bell logo on the final page which seemed to indicate these were first issue sheets reissued with a new title page and cover. Covici Friede however made up new sheets for this edition. This book comes with a later 1938 Sun Dial dust jacket which is decidedly original to this book. Jacket has some chipping at spine head and rear corner and also soiled on rear panel. Sun Dial apparently bought out remaining stock when Covici Friede went bankrupt in 1938 and then sold them with their own dust jackets. Sun Dial later went on to release other later reprints of this book.

Covici Friede / Sun Dial Press hardcover
