Otherwise a very good clean copy.

First Russian edition. First book by Steinbeck in Russian.

Although the book was banned shortly in Ireland and few American towns in schools and libraries it was for obvious reasons
never banned in Soviet Union. It was important for Soviet authorities to monitor what was published in the West. Unfortunately for them it was a hard task to find anything suitable for their purposes - a high standard bright foreign fiction with correct ideology. That is why Grapes of Wrath was a definite bombshell not only in America but even more so in Soviet Union. It made Steinbeck famous in a day. Starting in August of 1939 such newspapers as Pradva Ogonyok Literary Newspaper printed short fragments from Grapes of Wrath. Soviet newspapers made it famous even before it was fully published. For example Izvestiya from November 17th 1939 with an article titled "Grapes of Wrath - banned in USA" about a campaign against the book across America: ".because it reflects the hard
situation and conditions in which farmers live in California". Soviet anticapitalist interpretation was obvious and announced instantly in many reviews e.g. in one of these reviews was said the author "leads us to a logical way out - a revolution freeing lower classes from exploitation". Soviet periodicals clearly showed ideological and political bias typical for the Soviet assessment and interpretation of the novel as an example of proletarian and anti-capitalist American literature. After the full translation was published in 1940 Steinbeck received many letters from Soviet editors and officials thanking him for writing this novel and telling him about thousands of new fans.

In 1948 USSR bought rights for Grapes of Wrath film 1940 to demonstrate the Soviet viewer all "ulcers and vices" of American capitalism but in just a few days of the showing the film was cancelled because people noticed that a broke farmer was able to buy a used truck.

In 1963 Steinbeck came to Russia for the second time his first visit he described in his book A Russian Journal published in 1948. At one of the unofficial meetings at Russian poet Evtushenko's apartment he met a Siberian driver Evtushenko's uncle Andrey with whom he spent almost the entire evening in a conversation. Apparently the driver knew Grapes of Wrath very well which maid Steinbeck ecstatic: "You made my day Andrew! I would never thought truck drivers from Siberia would read my books!"

WorldCat locates four copies. Gosizdat unknown

He was part of the Golden Age of fine printing that took place during the 1920s and 1930s in Southern California. Ritchie was also part of the Artists of the Arroyo Seco community. In 1930 Ritchie apprenticed in Paris with the renowned artist and printer Fran ois-Louis Schmied. Upon his return to the States Ritchie co-founded along with fellow printer Grant Dahlstrom and bookseller Jacob Jake Zeitlin the Rounce & Coffin Club. This club was created as a less formal alternative to the Zamorano Club where other bibliophiles gathered in Los Angeles and to which he was later welcomed in 1934. The following year he established the Ward Ritchie Press through which he published thousands of books over 750 designed by himself; his output included works by poets Robinson Jeffers Carl Sandburg Archibald MacLeish Carlyle MacIntyre librarian Lawrence Clark Powell novelist Alexandre Dumas and many others. In 1987 he gave the Englehard Lecture on Fine Printing: The Los Angeles Tradition at the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress.

ABOUT THE PAMPHLET

This elusive Steinbeck publication is a letter from Steinbeck to Arnold Gingrich editor of Esquire thanking him for sending a watch as a gift. The letter is full of Steinbeck humor noting that he had expected a watch when he graduated from high school but none was forthcoming and since he didn't actually graduate from Stanford University he likewise hadn't received a watch as a gift. This work was privately printed at the Ward Ritchie Press as the Christmas greeting for the year from the Cohns. The Cohns are notable for being the owners of House of Books in New York one of the pioneering Booksellers in modern first editions.

CONDITION REPORT

The book is in FINE to VERY FINE vintage condition. No condition issues to note. Looks fresh and crisp like the day it was published. Perhaps some nominal edge rubbing if being super picky! The custom slipcase is in FINE or better condition.

A superior collectible copy of Steinbeck's rarest work!. Ward Ritchie unknown
1940WRCLIT77071Los Angeles: 2oth Century-Fox 1940. Five original 8 x 10" glossy b&w stills. Pencil numbers on two versos otherwise near fine. Thomas Hart Benton prepared several works as publicity pieces for John Ford's 1940 film version of Steinbeck's novel most famously a version of THE DEPARTURE OF THE JOADS that was incorporated in several of the differing styles of posters. He also prepared a series of portraits of the characters but these were not incorporated in the posters but rather utilized in the theatre program that was offered at the opening exhibitions of the film. They were also reproduced in the form of six stills according to the negative numbers - only five are present here evidently in very limited quantities as they are quite scarce. Apart from an appearance by this same group at auction in 2008 we've not encountered another. 2oth Century-Fox unknown books
1951530781London: Cowles Magazines Inc. 1951. Softcover. Very Good. Periodical. Quarto. 120pp. Heavily illustrated. A bit musty. Cover with a split and a bit of loss at the spine staples somewhat oxidized modest interior toning very good. Signed by John Steinbeck editor Fleur Cowles and contributor William Ward Beecher.

The final issue of this very interesting magazine sent by editor Fleur Cowles along with a warm Typed Letter Signed to artist William Ward Beecher to commemorate the collaboration. Fleur has Signed the magazine on the first page. Beecher allowed the use of a black and white reproduction of a Steinbeck-themed trompe l'oeil painting to illustrate the article "Tortilla B Flat: A Serenade to John Steinbeck Composed on the Typewriter" by Eddie Condon also illustrated with a portrait of Steinbeck by Robert Capa. A note in Beecher's hand laid in says: "N.B. this copy autographed by Fleur Cowles is also signed by John and me-" and indeed Steinbeck has Signed above the painting and Beecher beneath it. Also laid in is a Typed Letter Signed from a Flair employee to Beecher asking him to sign an agreement to reproduce the artwork.

A 2001 letter from Steinbeck's son Thom written to supply details about sitting for a portrait by Beecher called the artist a family friend and that his father "maintained an abiding fascination for Beecher's work through the years. A half-dozen examples of the artist's best canvases still brighten our house in New York." A nice association. Cowles Magazines, Inc.) unknown
