196028275N.p. n.d. but circa 1960 1960. Hinged on the verso of a board and matted which should probably be replaced. Original wooden frame preserved but chipped and worn. 27 x 20 cm signed on the verso in pencil by the photographer William Ward Beecher. A photographic portrait of John Steinbeck taken by artist William Ward Beecher 1921-2006 a descendant of the famous New England Beechers. How many portraits were produced from this one sitting is not recorded but there were at least two: this one and a similar one that was used in 1961 on the rear panel of the dust jacket of Winter of Our Discontent. This one which apparently was not published was the personal property of John and Elaine Steinbeck and was sold as part of the remains of their estate in February 2020. Betty and William Ward Beecher and the Steinbecks were apparently friends. The Beechers had books inscribed to them by John Steinbeck and the Steinbecks owned a few of Beecher's lithographs and paintings.

N.p., n.d. [but circa 1960] unknown books
196615900JNew York 1966. Original John Steinbeck engraved printed calling card 2 1/4 by 1 3/4 inches in very good condition with evidence of a former paperclip. This card was attached to a full page clipping which prints a John Steinbeck letter from the April 30 1966 issue of Newsday which Steinbeck sent to his friend Jack Valenti. The page clipping has tears and is fragile. The Steinbeck letter text deals with his opinions on assorted aspects of America. Accompanied by a COA from the Jack Valenti estate. Jack Valenti 1921-2007 is best known in his role as President of the Motion Picture Association of America. During his 38 year position in the MPAA Valenti created the MPAA film rating system which is still used today. Previously he had been a right hand man to President Lyndon Johnson. In 1963 Valenti was in the John F. Kennedy motorcade in Dallas and he is seen in the famous photograph of Lyndon Johnson being sworn in as President on Air Force One. Valenti flew back to Washington with Johnson and literally lived in the White House for two months helping Johnson take the reins of the presidency. Hollywood mogul and Democratic fundraiser Lew Wasserman pressured Lyndon Johnson to let Valenti leave in 1966 to run the MPAA. A striking and articulate man who easily made friends Valenti became a figure of considerable influence in both Hollywood and Washington. Few people have known as many famous and powerful people as Valenti. unknown books
