1952003441Amsterdam: J.M. Meulenhoff 1952. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Book has J.M. Meulenhoff as the publisher with 1952 as the published date. There is a small stain to the front cover and light browning to the spine and book edges. The pages are bright and clean. Although this 96 page book was printed in Amsterdam it is in English. There is a 16 page pamphlet laid-in which is a vocabulary translating various words and phrases from English to Dutch. A very unusual item that appears to be extremely scarce. There is no mention of this printing in the Goldstone & Payne Steinbeck bibliography nor is there any copy listed on line. Book is protected in a custom cut clear mylar cover. Text clean with mild toning. Light sunning and faint discoloration along spine and board edges; gilt on spine title moderately dulled. Corners and spine ends show light rubbing. Overall a solid well-preserved example the orange cloth a bit faded from light exposure.<br /> <br /> Facsimile dust jacket in a Mylar sleeve is flawless. Published December 1947 by Viking The Pearl was first serialized in Woman's Home Companion under the title 'The Pearl of the World'. The story was adapted into a 1947 Mexican film La perla directed by Emilio Fernández and later an American production securing its place among Steinbeck's most widely taught novellas. First Printing First Issue Dust Jacket Very near fine in decorated medium brown cloth covered boards with a gilt on black title block on the spine and a black sketch on the front board. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is only slightly rubbed. In a very good price clipped but replaced dust jacket with shallow chipping to the ends of the spine area shallow chips to the fore corners of the front panel over the tips of the boards rubbing to the fold to the front flap and two short 1/4 inch closed tears to the upper edge of the rear panel. Illustrated with drawings by Jose Clemente Orozco. This is the first state dust jacket with Steinbeck looking to his left on the rear panel. The Viking Press hardcover
