Thomas Myles Steinbeck 1944 â€" 2016 was a screenwriter photographer and journalist He published numerous works of fiction including short stories and novels He was the elder son of American novelist John Steinbeck<br /> This is a signed and inscribed "To the 'Queen of the Nile' Thomas S We peel grapes" It is a typescript draft of a screenplay of one of his father's better known books The Pearl and dated "Final Draft Polish Corrected 9/24/94"<br /> It is comprised of looseleaf pages between vinyl cover pages held by common office fasteners and is in excellent condition with no other marks or damage<br /> It was acquired in an auction of items from the estate of John and Elaine Steinbeck so this copy was owned by John Steinbeck's third wife Elaine who died in 2003 The estate auction tag is shown in the photo <br /> <br /> . Inscribed by the author in the year of issue "For Ed Lee John Steinbeck 1935" A previous dealer has indicated that the recipient was H. E. Lee lifelong Salinas resident. "This is the remaining portion of the approximately 1850 sheets sold by Brewer Warren & Putnam to Robert O. Ballou and by the latter to Covici-Friede." An episodic short story cycle composed of ten self-contained but related stories set in the Corral de Tierra of the Salinas Valley of California. It is said to "rival The Long Valley 1938 as Steinbeck's major achievement in short fiction". Written by John Ernst Steinbeck an American writer who was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature. In the original green cloth binding. Externally sound with light bumping and wear to the extremities. Fading to the spine and board edges. Light loss to the head of the spine and board tips with small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light age toning to the endpapers. A very small closed tear to the edge of page 201/202 with the odd page remaining unopened. Publisher's black topstain to block. One of an estimated 1000 remainders sold by Brewer to Ballou in 1932. Original Brewer sheets with a tipped-in Robert O.Ballou title page which is a cancel. Spine is heavily faded with gilt titling most worn-away though Robert Ba. can be discerned at the foot to the spine and the "R" is higher that the other letters. Good hinges and tight binding though there is a minor forward slant to spine. Previous owner's signature to front pastedown. The text is bright and clean and free of any annotations. Pages 273-276 have been opened somewhat roughly. The upper corner of back free endpaper has a small area of spotting. Steinbeck's scarce second novel is a cornerstone of any collection and this is a good and very presentable copy overall. Securely packaged and shipped in a box. <br/> <br/> Robert O. Ballou hardcover
