7378(Paris), 1789.

16031Addams Jane. Handbill. 1911. "Jane Addams Wants to Vote." Eminent American social worker Jane Addams outlines an argument for women's suffrage in this extract from an article in Ladies' Home Journal in 1910. Jane Addams who is known for promoting the idea that it is each person's responsibility to help the community at large writes that women need the right to vote to ensure "the members of her own household that they may be properly fed and clothed and surrounded by hygienic conditions." There are no known copies among institutional collections or libraries in the US as per OCLC 2019.

Addams argues that city women are "utterly dependent upon the city administrations for the conditions which render decent living possible." Without these public services tenement bathrooms may have unsanitary plumbing and stairways may not be fireproof markets may sell meat that has not been inspected and garbage may pile up on the street. In order to keep a sanitary and safe environment for her family a woman needs to vote for policies that accomplish this. Pencil notation "5" to upper right corner not affecting text. Otherwise near fine. unknown books

First edition, half-title, [4], 99, [1]pp., disbound, half-title detached. A former officer in the East India Company's armies and Commander in Chief of the Great Mogul's Forces, Major John Morrison, returned to Britain in 1772 styled as 'Commander in Chief of the Great Mogul's forces'. Morrison was regarded as a traitor by the East India Company but he did succeed in publishing a pamphlet entitled "The Advantage of an Alliance with the Great Mogul" in 1774. Positioning himself alongside advocates of direct Crown control over Indian territories, Morrison suggested that Shah Alam II would be willing to cede Bengal to George III. The emperor's rough treatment at the hands of the Company, especially the non-payment of tribute, was lambasted as 'a dishonourable blow to the law of nations'. A proper agreement between kings would restore 'the stability and dignity of regal government', and replace 'the fluctuating and unsteady resolve of a Company of private men'. Kress, S2527; Goldsmith, 11155; Higgs, 5981.

First edition, [4], 5-25pp., advertisement leaf at end, disbound. Describes the manner of recruiting by the British Army by crimping (similar to naval press-ganging), and describes it as little more than slavery. The author quotes from legal and other sources and cites examples of the problems associated with this manner of recruitment. He emphasizes the idea that an enslaved or forced soldier is not likely to be a good soldier, describes how wealth or education was not a protection against impressment and several other factors affecting the military services. Goldsmith, 16436.
