Though a tory Burton was not so extreme as Dr William King, principal of St Mary Hall, and under the pseudonym Phileleutherus Londinensis he criticized King's celebrated speech at the dedication of the Radcliffe Library, in Oxford, on 13 April 1749. King responded with a fierce 'Elogium famae inserviens Jacci Etonensis, or, The praises of Jack of Eton, commonly called Jack the Giant' (1750), in which he satirized 'the Burtonic style'."?(New ODNB). An attack on an article in the Edinburgh Review which purported to deal with the debates in the House of Commons on the state of Ireland, and the Irish Arms Bill. The stated object of this reply was "to point to the public the difficulty and impolicy of an attempt to force the Irish Catholics a provision for their clergy; at the same time to draw public attention to some measures of a plain, and practical, kind, which may enlist the attention, perhaps the support, of men of all parties." Among other subjects, the writer deals with the state of landed property, the administration of justice to the poor, the established church, education, the Irish Poor Law, and the repeal of the Union

Describes the manner of recruiting by the British Army by crimping (similar to naval press-ganging), and describes it as little more than slavery. The author quotes from legal and other sources and cites examples of the problems associated with this manner of recruitment. He emphasizes the idea that an enslaved or forced soldier is not likely to be a good soldier, describes how wealth or education was not a protection against impressment and several other factors affecting the military services.
