1802B3402Paris: P. Didot l’Ainé an X c. 1802. Corners bumped occasional light scattered foxing to margins minor age-toning to text leaves; otherwise a very good set of this significant historical work plates are generally clean and crisp. Edition: First edition. Binding: Full contemporary calf with gilt-tooled borders spine in seven densely gilt compartments of gilt raised double bands gilt text on seven crimson morocco labels on two and three inner dentelles gilt all edges tinted yellow endpapers marbled. Notes: This book went into several editions in the same year being an exceptionally popular account and depiction of Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt as well as a general description of Egyptian archaeological finds. This copy does not contain the extra portrait of Denon. However Brunet II:50 remarks that this is a very interesting work carefully executed and highly prized as demonstrated by its swift running into several editions. By 1803 it had already been republished in Paris in a 2-volume 4to edition with accompanying atlas volume and translated into German and English. Dutch and Italian translations swiftly followed. Vinet 1752 accords a high place for this book that is demonstrated by the book’s own dedication to Napoleon: a “diapason de l’époque†containing the entire register of the era’s appreciation of Napoleon. He further credits the book’s high worth with Denon’s acquaintanceship with the General not yet Emperor as well as its being among the first of its kind: “son principal mérite … c’est d’en avoir donné l’avant-goût.†It’s interesting he concludes because its author simultaneously held a gun and a brush reflected in the juxtaposition between plates depicting the battles and plates depicting classical monuments. Size: Folio. Illustration: Complete with 143 plates on 142 leaves 11 of which are folding or double-page. Includes 6 maps and charts of Egypt including excavation sites and battle plans. Volume: Two volumes. References: Ibrahim-Hilmy I:172-4; Wilbour 178 later editions; Graesse II:362; Brunet II:50; Cicognara 2520 Italian edition; Vinet 1752. Pages: P.
