As a young man Piaget became a teacher of French at Mr. de Raedt's Instituut Noorthey nl an upper class boarding school in the Netherlands. After obtaining a doctorate in Roman Law at Leiden University he remained in the Netherlands but did not practice law as a profession working instead as a private tutor until 1844 when he was appointed teacher of French and History at the Gymnasium Erasmianum in Rotterdam. Later he taught at the Hogere burgerschool for secondary education in Rotterdam. In 1884 aged 67 he returned to Les Bayards to live with his sister. Piaget's collection of lice Pédiculines was obtained from animals in the Zoological Gardens at Rotterdam and from skins in the Naturalis in Leiden. It was enhanced by specimens from all over the world sent for identification and description. His entomological collection herbarium and library were given to the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in Neuchâtel. Part of his collection is now in the Natural History Museum in London with his general entomological collection still at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in Neuchâtel. Wikipedia paperback

1966009587Dordrecht: D. Reidel 1966 8vo 22.5 cm XXII 326 pp. Publisher's cloth binding slightly sunned and rubbed inscription on the front free endpaper: “Archief E. W. Beth”. First edition. A remarkable collaborative work bringing together two of the twentieth century's leading thinkers on the foundations of knowledge--the logician and philosopher of mathematics E. W. Beth and the developmental psychologist Jean Piaget--to address a question that had divided them: what is the relationship between formal logic and ordinary human thought The book is structured in two complementary parts. Beth's contribution takes a historico-critical approach surveying the philosophy of mathematical reasoning from Aristotle and Descartes through Kant Leibniz and the great modern logicians--Frege Russell Hilbert Brouwer and others--examining how mathematical demonstration works and what role intuition plays alongside formal proof. Piaget's part approaches the same questions psycho-genetically drawing on his empirical studies of child development to show how logical and mathematical structures emerge from concrete action and sensory-motor activity gradually becoming internalised as abstract operations of thought. Together the two authors seek a synthesis between the epistemological and psychological dimensions of mathematical knowledge concluding with reflections on the convergences between formal and genetic approaches. A richly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of logic philosophy and cognitive science. D. Reidel hardcover
