The medieval English West Midlands has long been associated with the production of vernacular texts, in Old and Middle English, and with the making of several famous manuscripts. The aim of this volume is to re-think assumptions about medieval literature and the region in the light of new research in medieval book history. A series of specially commissioned essays in 'manuscript geography' examines the making and use of texts and books in relation to cultural networks in the region and beyond. Included are case studies of manuscripts of Worcester and the Worcester diocese from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries; investigations of manuscript production in fourteenth-century Shropshire and its wider regional links; and essays on textual cultures in Warwickshire from the activities of the aristocrats and gentry of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to the projects of later antiquarians. Essays in the final section of the volume reflect on the possibilities of large-scale, corpus-based research on medieval manuscript books. Collectively the essays identify and explore some of the investments of traditional regionalist accounts of vernacular literary culture and model new theoretical and methodological approaches. 229 pages including bibliography and index. "Any friend of heraldry will eventually run into difficulties when trying to become acquainted with the customary heraldic practice of foreign countries. There is the problem of discovering which books to study and where to find them, and there is the frustrating experience of seeing one's efforts handicapped by language barriers. I have been collecting information about international heraldry for many years, with emphasis on its pictorial peculiarities and the peculiarities of customs, rules and styles, excepting those regions in the Balkans which underwent different trends of development during their occupation by the Turks... This book is the result. It is far from being encyclopaedic but should be of value to anyone wishing to gain a more international view of the subject. It should also serve as an introduction to heraldry for a newcomer to the field. Chapters include: Introduction; The Sheild; Charges; The Helm, Crest and Mantling; Blazon; Supporters; Augmentations; Differencing and Cadency; Marshalling of Arms; Burgher-Arms; Gentry, Untitled Continental Mobility, Knights and Baronets; Titled Nobility; Princes, Kings, Dukes and Emperors; Corporate Arms; Religious Orders of Chivalry; Heraldry in the Roman Catholic Church; Heraldry in the Church of England; Badges. Glossy colour illustrations throughout. Clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear. Excellent copy. Book

Tentoonstellingscatalogus.
