Illustrated study of Orson Welles by two major figures in cinema history the great artist and writer Jean Cocteau whose line drawing of Welles serves as the frontispiece and by Andre Bazin 1918 - 1958 one of the most influential film critics and authors of modern times and co-founder of the classic French film publication Le Cahiers du Cinema in 1951. Andre Bazin’s four-volume collection of writings Qu'est-ce que le cinéma What is Cinema was published posthumously from 1958 to 1962. Two of these volumes were translated into English in the late 1960s and 1970s and became mainstays of film studies in the US and England. Bazin was an advocate of films that portrayed "objective reality" as in documentaries and films of the Italian neorealism school and directors who crafted their films with a subtle hand such as Howard Hawks. He favored the use of deep focus such as employed by Orson Welles wide shots as used by Jean Renoir the "shot-in-depth" and telling the story of the film in a continuous narrative as opposed to the more experimental styles and visual effects which were becoming popular. His theories and preferences greatly influenced the development of the Auteur theory. Francois Truffaut dedicated his classic film The 400 Blows to Bazin who sadly died one day after shooting commenced on the film. A rare cinema autograph. Chavane unknown books
