32139S.l.n.d. 1972. 298 f. premières épreuves et 300 f. secondes épreuves sous 2 chemises cartonnées et titrées à l'encre 150 x 230 m. . Bel ensemble. [S.l.n.d.], 1972. 298 f. [premières épreuves] et 300 f. In note: Issued as a duodecimo in Paris in 1644 and 1654 and in London in 1654 and 1665.†Anja-Silvia Goeing Early Modern Universities: Networks of Higher Learning. Georges Fournier a French Jesuit priest geographer and mathematician served as a naval military chaplain on a ship of the line and acquired a strong knowledge of technical and naval matters. In 1642 he published the treaty Hydrographie where he attempted to provide a scientific foundation to the design of ships. He also authored a Treaty of fortifications or military architecture drawn from the most estimated places of our times for fortifications whose original edition was published in Paris in 1649 by Jean Hénault at the Salle Dauphine of l'ange gardien. Another edition was published in 1668 in Mayence by Louis Bourgeat. His works on Euclidean geometry Paris 1644 and 1654 were translated into English and gave rise to three successive editions.Georges Fournier taught René Descartes.Steck IV p. 100. </em> hardcover

Later full brown leather spine with raised bands and red gilt morocco lettering pieces; pp. xvi 452 16pp. index and 12 folding engraved plates at rear; occasional marginal annotation occasional very light spotting very good.First edition in English. Preface: ""The care and culture of Bees have always been one of the most agreeable and useful employments of a country life. The antients cultivated these animals with care from a prospect of honey which was among them as much in use as sugar among us. But since it has been thought proper to substitute sugar in the room of honey the latter has fallen into considerable discredit: but then in return wax has become the subject of a very considerable commerce . "" The book takes the form of a dialogue between ""Clarissa"" who needs to know more about every aspect of bees and bee-keeping and ""Eugenio"" the author in disguise. B.B.B. - ""There is no hint in the book as to who did the translation but it may well have been P. Vailant who is known to have been in Paris in 1739 and may have translated from the proofs. The Vailants were a French Protestant family who settled in The Strand as foreign booksellers at the time of The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.British Bee Books 96. hardcover

195016926EParis: Chavane 1950. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author French film critic and theorist Andre Bazin: “a Pierre Robin Amicalement. A. Bazin 28/1/50.†â€For Pierre Robin In friendship. A. Bazin 28/1/50.†Paperbound 5†x 6 1/2â€. Text in French. Near fine copy with a touch of dust soiling to the covers in printed wrappers. Illustrated study of Orson Welles by two major figures in cinema history the great artist and writer Jean Cocteau whose line drawing of Welles serves as the frontispiece and by Andre Bazin 1918 - 1958 one of the most influential film critics and authors of modern times and co-founder of the classic French film publication Le Cahiers du Cinema in 1951. Andre Bazin’s four-volume collection of writings Qu'est-ce que le cinéma What is Cinema was published posthumously from 1958 to 1962. Two of these volumes were translated into English in the late 1960s and 1970s and became mainstays of film studies in the US and England. Bazin was an advocate of films that portrayed "objective reality" as in documentaries and films of the Italian neorealism school and directors who crafted their films with a subtle hand such as Howard Hawks. He favored the use of deep focus such as employed by Orson Welles wide shots as used by Jean Renoir the "shot-in-depth" and telling the story of the film in a continuous narrative as opposed to the more experimental styles and visual effects which were becoming popular. His theories and preferences greatly influenced the development of the Auteur theory. Francois Truffaut dedicated his classic film The 400 Blows to Bazin who sadly died one day after shooting commenced on the film. A rare cinema autograph. Chavane unknown books
