These were apparently originally published in Dublin in the 1830s for the Sunday School Union. The imprint on these New York editions reads "Published by Lane & Scott for the Sunday-School Union of the Metropolitan Episcopal Church." Volume 1 bears the bookplate of engineer and businessman Edwin Stanton Fickes and the pencil inscription "A school book of Geo J and Henry H. Fickes used in the 1850s in Oskaloosa IA. - ESF." Trash" Anonymous manuscript poem of 149 lines 5pp in the voice of a Depression-era refugee

19704N.p. N.d. Original typescript 5pp on ruled bond. Typed rectos-only. Light soil; single horizontal fold; Very Good. A highly accomplished and moving long poem written in the voice of an unemployed mill-town woman during the Great Depression. Unattributed and undated but apparently based on paper and degree of wear contemporary with the events described.<br/><br/>Whether actually written by an unemployed mill-worker's wife or by a "trained" writer adopting that voice for proletarian effect the poem is remarkable for its unpretentious style and its graphic realistic depiction of the tribulations of unemployed workers during the Great Depression. From its opening line: "All I've ever done in this / Damned life of mine is cry" the poem recounts a series of bleak episodes in a poor southern woman's life: "My man was workin' full - / But now the mill's down / We're all down. / But we still gotta eat / We still got babies to feed . Them big guys up there / They got their bellys full / They got plenty of coal. / Their kids don't have to / Walk tracks lookin' for coal." The author goes on to relate her battles with the "government man" and the WPA but ends the work on a hopeful note: "I'm just so glad that / They give free books at schools / Cause now my boys and girls / Can finish high school And then they'll always have jobs . Too much around me that don't look nice So I'm gonna keep thinking somepin' that is nice."<br/><br/>The poem is unknown to us in any published version though the setting and theme are by no means unique for the period. unknown books

An unusual case: Patrizi convened a council to consider the case of Marguerite Marie Alacoque but before a conclusion on her blessedness the second step towards sainthood - she had been declared venerable by Pope Leo XII in 1824 was reached he died. A few months later Pope Pius took up the cause and she was declared blessed. This is the original case as set forward by Patrizi. Marguerite Marie Alacoque was sainted in 1920. She was widely influential in the veneration of the Sacred Heart and the Holy Hour. Her devotional writings were published posthumously as La Devotion au Sacré-Coeur de Jesus. Text provides guidance to recognize various illnesses with treatments with 14 pages listing the medical properties of plants. The Ladies' Domestic Economy and Housekeepers' guide provides copious recipes cookery for the sick the lady's work-box stitching dress work baskets directions for coloring garments with etiquette following the same pattern as earlier editions although the rules for marriage love letters and proposals have been dispensed with. Two pages of recipes from another cook book laid in. Owner's signature on front free end paper. Pages foxed boards heavily rubbed. Lowenstein lists a 1859 copy. <br/><br/> H. Dayton hardcover books

185038418New York: Leavitt & Allen n.d. ca 1850. 6/25/16. 260 pp. with an extra color lithographed title and b/w engraved plates by Sartain. <br/><br/>An extra-fancy edition of a familiar 19th century genre the gift book - a compendium of saccharine stories and verse. This one contains a color title and is bound in embossed leather with circular hand painted lozenges inset on the front and back covers. All edges gilt. The book has been rebacked but the backstrip is also embossed leather and nicely matches the rest of the binding. True to form the book is inscribed by a well wisher to Elizabeth B. Mann "sometime before their wedding Dec. 12 1859." The only discordant note is that the painting inset into the front board surrounded by a rim of gold and mother of pearl represents a sinking ship.
