It featured thousands of engravings by Henry Winkler and others of all areas of 19th century technology as well as literature arts and other sciences. The thirty-two plates in this reprint contain multiple images on each plate. It's a sort of visual history of marine technology from ships of classical times to modern steam-powered vessels. No publishing info. but obviously a 20th Century reprint. A wonderful source of images. Fine condition. books

In fact this was a promotional for a stuffed whale exhibit. The centerfold is an illustration of Capt. Lew Nichols pictured chomping his cigar on page 1 killing a sixty-eight ton Blue Fin-Back. Whatever species it actually was Nichols stuffed it and exhibited it in Chicago where over half a million people availed themselves of the opportunity of seeing this giant sea monster in the flesh. 182643156Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union n.d. Circa 1826. A preacher in England bumps into an old Sunday School student of his named John Robins. The two get to talking and Robins tells how he managed to lose an eye and a best friend at Trafalgar and then a leg in the course of his naval career. He spent quite a while "in the service of sin" but eventually found his way back to the Lord and now is perfectly happy to have been "a brand plucked out of the burning." Well to each his own. Worldcat dates this pretty little book at 1826. It stands 4 1/4 inches tall and is bound in quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt spine lettering.
