AL-68
Charming Small Photo & Art Album Showing Women Students in New York 1892-93

This petite album is one of the loveliest I've owned. You can tell it was put together with care although sadly not by whom. That said as there is an image of the 1892 Columbus Day parade in New York City I'm assuming all the photos were taken in the City. The women in the album appear to live at number 715 Fifth Avenue which would have given them the view of the parade and the Columbus Arch at the end of Fifth Ave.

The woman appear to be in college as there are three classroom shots including what looks like a chemistry lab. The last page in the album is a drawing of 715 for rent. I wish we could find out more about these young women especially the one who compiled the album and made such cute drawings of little brownies.

The album's cover has some soiling but the pages are in near fine condition with some photos showing a bit of silvering. There are 21 pages that have photos/art on them. The other three are blank.

19175680Japan: S.P. C1917. A beautiful Japanese family photograph album. Contains 38 photographs mainly silver gelatin including 4 CDV's and a couple of sepia and five photograph postcards. The curious feature of this album is that although it primarily follows the same Japanese family from Circa 1905-1917 the postcards that are tipped in have annotations in French and include Vietnam and Burma. A lot of the focus of the photographs is on the traditional dress of the women and you can see the transition from the kimono through to the modern woman about town. There are also two newspaper cuttings in French one on Japanese fashions and one on Japanese haircuts. Our personal favourite photograph is a rather grumpy looking old man in traditional costume. He is sitting for a formal celebration of longevity. On his chest are kanji characters: å…«åå… â€” meaning "86 years old" and to his side is a figurine which celebrates 86 years of life. The birthday boy doesn't look terribly pleased with the idea! The album is 23cm x 16cm. To the front cover is a colour photo postcard of a woman leafing through a photograph album. An annotation in French is dated 1917. "Cochinchinе Saïgon le 25 avril 1917" There is also a piece of kimono material tipped onto the cover. The album is now covered in protective plastic. There photographs vary in size. Quite a few are studio shots of individuals and the family. A lovely example of the genre. . S.P. unknown
16331977London: John Norton for Joyce Norton 1633. A nice copy of this two volume work unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work particularly to the edges and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one. Also lacking is leaf 3I2 page 99/100 with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely a full page plate dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily published in various forms is important as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98 vi 1-98 101-320 iv. 290 x 210 mm 11½ x 8¼ inches. John Norton for Joyce Norton hardcover

1809LTH20-A-3Oxford: Dawson Bensley and Cooke 1809. Leather. Very Good. 12" by 9.5". None. A beautifully bound 1809 publication of the Book of Common Prayer. Bound into the end is 'a new version of the Psalms of David fitted to the tunes used in churches by N Brady Chaplain in Ordinary and N Tate Poet-Laureat to His Majesty'. Printed 1807. With 'the form and manner of making ordaining and consecrating of bishops priests and deacons'. Includes the calendar with the table of lessons the table of movable feasts. Printed at the Clarendon Press by Dawson Bensley and Cooke printers to the University; and sold by W. Dawson at the Oxford Bible Warehouse Paternoster Row London. The Book of Common Prayer is the short title of a number of related prayer books used in the Anglican Communion as well as by the Continuing Anglican "Anglican realignment" and other Anglican churches. The original book published in 1549 Church of England 1957 in the reign of Edward VI was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. Prayer books unlike books of prayers contain the words of structured or liturgical services of worship. By the 19th century other pressures upon the book of 1662 had arisen. Adherents of the Oxford Movement begun in 1833 raised questions about the relationship of the Church of England to the apostolic church and thus about its forms of worship. Known as Tractarians after their production of Tracts for the Times on theological issues they advanced the case for the Church of England being essentially a part of the 'Western Church' of which the Roman Catholic Church was the chief representative. The Book of Common Prayer has had a great influence on a number of other denominations. While theologically different the language and flow of the service of many other churches owes a great debt to the prayer book. Together with the Authorized version and the works of Shakespeare the Book of Common Prayer has been one of the three fundamental underpinnings of modern English. As it has been in regular use for centuries many phrases from its services have passed into the English language either as deliberate quotations or as unconscious borrowings. In a decorative contemporary Regency full morocco binding. Externally generally sound although rubbed the front joint just starting. Internally firmly bound. Bright with light scattered spotting. Copperplate ink inscription dated 1813 to front blank. Slight loss to front free-endpaper. Very Good Dawson, Bensley and Cooke hardcover
