Good. 1681 first edition 'Printed for Francis Peters' London 7 x 12 inches tall hardbound marbled boards over leather spine five raised bands and gilt-stamped red leather label to spine refreshed endpapers 26 pp. All pages are browned and chipped/tatty to fore-edge with Japanese tissue repair see images which has a few small losses and tears. The effected fore edge is in a couple of spots mildly obscured. Lightly grubby to title page with the odd mark or crease. Else in mostly clean and tight condition. A beautifully-bound scarce anti-Catholic pamphlet. References: Wing 1996 V725; ESTC No. R7957. ~PPP~ A first edition copy of the 1681 broadside issued anonymously by the radical Whigs during the Restoration period in England containing a series of Whig-oriented petitions to the members of the Oxford Parliament. The principal theme of these petitions was stated as 'No Popish Successor no French Slavery.' Though purporting to speak for 'the people' the anonymous author makes clear that this does not refer to the 'hoi polloi' but rather to citizens of some means. In the preface the author notes that 'some people have lately spoken contemptuously of the populace calling them the rabble . . . the dregs of mankind.' These terms are applied to 'persons without estates' who are assumed to be without 'reason and judgment' but he argues he is writing on behalf of 'men of large estates well-bred gentlemen merchants . . . and rich and substantial yeomen and freeholders.' The Restoration of the English monarchy began when the English Scottish and Irish monarchies were all restored under Charles II after the Interregnum that followed the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Viztlipuztli was a 'woodden Image like a Man upon his Head stood a Plume of feathers on his left right Hand held a white Shield on which stuck five Feathers and on the top a Laurel Bough; next the Shield lay four Arrows pretended to be sent from Heaven behind on his Shoulders appears Wings on his feet ended in Claws hung round about with Precious Jems. The Curtain behind which this Idol sat was not drawn open except on Feast-Day'.<br /> From John Ogilby's 'America: Being the Latest and Most Accurate Description of the New World' published in London in 1671. Ogilby's work is an English translation of Arnoldus Montanus 'Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld' published in Amerstdam although greatly expanded in some instances and with new maps and views. A single issue of a weekly anti-Catholic diatribe in the form of a contemporary broadside issued at the time of the Popish Plot 1678-1681. The Weekly Pacquet is Number 16 - Both of the broadsides were issued Friday 24th October 1679. Pagination is continuous presumably from issue 1 and these leaves are numbered page 121 - 128. They are held together but would appear to have been bound together with other issues at some point. 16 pages. 190 by 140mm 7½ by 5½ inches. Scarce - last seen at auction in 1981. Pages 12 20 are misnumbered as called for. ESTC no: R36782 WING: R1206 Collated complete with the final blank. With the signatures A4 B2 C-E4. This work is a satire on John Dryden with extracts from his poems. The title references his allegorical poem 'The Hind and the Panther' which is regarded as one of his most controversial. Dryden had converted to Catholicism around the same time as the Catholic monarch James II's accession to the throne in 1685. Many Protestant writers were disgusted by this particularly as previous poems by Dryden included praise towards Puritan Protectorate Oliver Cromwell. Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' came from Dryden's conversion and he describes the different religious denominations as animals making clear his new stance as a Catholic. This 'Trage-Comedy' is a response to Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' and his revolt against his previous beliefs. The introduction provides a synopsis of Dryden's poem and states that for writing it Dryden deserves to be 'reckon'd in the number of the Heathen Gods'. A very scarce work which provides context to the political and social climate of the seventeenth century. Disbound as called for. Externally smart with just a few light spots to the front and rear wraps. Internally firmly bound. To A2 there is a small ring mark at the bottom of the page not affecting the text. This work was first published during Cromwell's Commonwealth. With an illustrated frontispiece of Henrietta Maria. ESTC records show that this is the ninth edition overall of this work. ESTC reference no R21760. Collated Lacking pags 108-180 i.e F-H12 to part I. Lacking pages 30-53 i.e. L2-L12 of part II. Lacking pages 107-108 i.e S11 of part III. With separate title pages to parts II and III. Though the pagination differs the register is continuous. These recipes were purported to be from the kitchen on Henrietta Maria the wife of King Charles I. It was originally published following the execution of Charles I and six years after Henrietta Maria fled England during the interregnum. These recipes are 'incomparable secrets in Physick Chirurgery Preserving and Candying &c. Which were presented unto the Queen by the most experienced persons of the times'. Being all three parts in one. 'The Queens Closed Opened'. 'A Queens Delight or the Art of Preserving'. and 'The Compleat Cook'. When this work was first published Cromwell had been in charge for six years and the riches of the old aristocracy were a subject of fascination. These recipes provided insight into the ingredients found in royal and aristocratic pantries and cabinets. Noted recipes include 'The Kings Medicine for the Plague' and 'A salve for the eyes made by Sir Edward Spencer'. A very scarce household work which forms as an historical source of court life during the Stuart reign. Held in a custome cloth chemise and slipcase. With the contemporary calf boards and spine present. The original binding has failed leaving this work disbound. Extenally the original boards and backstrip are rubbed. Gatherings are loose. Pages are bright. Tape repairs to the edges of many pages throughout. Collated Lacking pags 108-180 i.e F-H12 to part I. Lacking pages 30-53 i.e. L2-L12 of part II. Pascal penned his 'lettre pronvinciales' defending the Jansenist Antione Arnauld. The letters are a rhetoric against casuistry a means used by Jesuit theologians. The book was banned by Louis XIV in 1660. It was first translated into English in 1657.Written by Blaise Pascal 1623-1662 the French writer philosopher mathematician and theologian. Lacking the frontispiece illustration.Bound by Webb & Hunt of Liverpool. An early English translation of this influential work. In a half calf binding. Externally generally smart with some rubbing to the extremities and a little wear to the boards. Front joint is starting a touch. Internally front joint is strained but firm. 1670601L7London: E Okes for William Whitwood 1670. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour and his skin was rough and tawny like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head but his locks were weather-turned like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. DNB This work is the ESTC no. R20134. A scarce first edition of Justice of Peace His Calling; A Moral Essay written anonymously by Edmund Bohun. First edition referencing Copac. With a fold out of the 9 rules of making a good Justice of the Peace. Educated at Cambridge Edmund Bohun was a seventeenth-century English writer on history and politics. He was mainly known for his political writing attacking the Whigs for he was a staunch Tory publicist. Although in support of the Glorious Revolution he was briefly imprisoned for the publication of a pamphlet by a gentleman with a similar name. After this imprisonment and an embarrassment at Parliament Bohun emigrated to Caroline to be the first Chief Justice there. Collated: Complete Rebound in quarter calf with paper bound boards. Externally smart with handling marks and light rubbing to top of spine. Fading to boards. Ex libris bookplate to pastedowns. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean but age toned. 1617659L6Oxford: John Baskett 1716-1717. First edition. Fine Binding. Very Good. 21" by 14". None. A beautiful set of the famed 'Vinegar Bible' published by John Baskett of Oxford. Dibdin notes this Bible as 'the most magnificent' of the Oxford Bibles. A handsome edition with this set bound in a binding with George III's monogram to the boards. The first edition of the 'Vinegar Bible' which is known as such due to the erroneous 'The parable of the vinegar' instead of 'vineyard' above Luke XX the verso of G6 to the New Testament. This variant has the 1717 imprint to the Old Testament and the 1716 imprint to the New Testament. Printed by John Baskett who was the King's printer. Baskett held a reputation for purchasing competing Bible printing business and absorbing them into his own. He wished to produce a high quality Bible in a folio edition that would become a presentation piece used in churches and aristocrats. This Bible was therefore produced. A scarce edition of The Bible which holds important stature in the history of print and in the bibliography of The Bible. Particularly scarce in this contemporary Royal binding which is possibly a presentation binding produced for this work. This edition has the red-ruling throughout both volumes. The 'Vinegar Bible' is noted for its beautiful head and tail pieces throughout. Harry Carter in 'The History of the Oxford University Press' notes that 'only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type impression and paper' Carter p.171. This copy has been skillfully rebacked to both volumes with the original spines laid down and boards preserved. With a Sotheran stamp to the verso of front endpaper. With the vignette title page depicting the Clarendon Building to the Old Testament. To the New Testament there is a vignette title page depicting the Annunciation. Sumptuously illustrated throughout with head and tail pieces in addition to engraved ornamental letters. With the signatures: 1 a-b2 c1 2 A-4P6 4Q3; 1 A-X6 Y4 Collated without additional engraved title page. Blank 4Q4 to the Old Testament and Apocrypha is not present. Gathering is bound after c1 rather than preceding a-b2 as it is found in the ESTC signatures. Another nickname for this edition was 'A Baskett-ful of Errors' due to the numerous misprints Herbert 942; Darlow & Moule 735. A very smart copy of this work in an important contemporary binding. In uniform contemporary black morocco bindings with the monogram of George III to the front boards. 'GR' Monogram to the spines. Rebacked with the original spines laid down and boards preserved. Externally generally smart. Light marks to boards and minor fading to the gilt. Internally both volumes are firmly bound. Small loss to the dedication leaf from chipping with repairs to the dedication leaf at the gutter. Minor chips to first few leaves to the Old Testament at the extremities. Tiny worm holes to 1 of Old Testament. Occasional tape repairs to the margins of leaves to both volumes noticeably to the bottom margin of E1 to the outer margin of E5 and to 2L3 which affects the occasional word to the left hand column. R6 has slight creasing and some minor closed tears to the gutter not affecting text. Small loss to the bottom margin of 2B2. Small loss to the extremities of 4C2. 'New Testament' also has repairs to the bottom margin several leaves including the title page C5 & 6 N2 and T2. To H3 there is a repair to a closed tear at the bottom of the page not affecting the text. Tape repairs to the text of K4 to the New Testament obscuring the occasional word. Pages are unusually bright. The majority of leaves to this work are clean however 4F2 and 4F5 to the Old Testament are spotted. Very Good John Baskett unknown
