Later spotted full calf blind double fillets to boards titles gilt to spine all edges speckled red. An early English account of Morocco by an anonymous pamphleteer sometimes called 'Robert Cottingham'. This volume gives an account of the privateer and adventurer Sir Anthony Sherley's 1565-1636 ambassadorships from Rudolf II Holy Roman Emperor to Mowlai Abd-el-Aziz son of Ahmed II Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. These accounts were made famous in Samuel Purchas's influential 'Purchas his Pilgrimmes' 1614 which is a rather more robust volume. Sherley was a remarkably well travelled Elizabethan gentleman beginning his career as a captain in Robert Dudley's forces before becoming a knight of Henri IV and then launching military expeditions to West Africa Sao Tome and Jamaica. Sherley journeyed to Persia where he became the representative of the Shah in Moscow Prague and Rome. Effectively exiled from his own country Sherley went to Prague where he became emissary of the Holy Roman Emperor to Morocco. He would later became an admiral of the Spanish fleet in the Levant. He died in 1635 penniless and obscure. This pamphlet presents Sherley's experiences in Morocco as well as accounts from other travellers like him as it would have appeared to the English reading public for the first time. Slight nicks to boards joints beginning to crack. First and final leaves a little soiled and small contemporary ink numeral to title-page. Modest paper repair to margin of C4 and occasional light spots of soiling to margins only. A very good copy. Rare in commerce we can locate one copy only at auction in the last 70 years. Title preface a dedication to the Queen Regent written by "the Maids of St Joseph" the text of the prerogatives. This is in fact an anti-catholic pamphlet from William Clagett. William Clagett 1646–1688 was an English clergyman and pamphleteer particularly active during the reign of James II. As well as his own pamphlets he would translate particularly colourful Continental Catholic material with the aim of making the Catholics an object of ridicule. This is one of those pieces. A nice copy of this pamphlet. Apart from a a few slight marks the pamphlet is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together.ii i-xv i vi 1-20. pp. WING A108. Ric. 1688655L26London: Randall Taylor; Henry Hills 1688. First edition. Disbound. Good. 8.5" by 6.5". None. Two politically fuelled pamphlets regarding the fallout following James II's Penal Laws. These pamphlets directly relate to the Seven Bishops' petition. The Seven Bishops were members of the Church of England who were tried and acquitted for seditious libel. The bishops include William Sancroft the Archbishop of Canterbury. The seven men opposed James II's 'Declaration of Indulgence' which was supposedly a step towards establishing religious freedom in the British Isles. Many suspected that it was to suit the Catholic King's own agenda. The first pamphlet to this set regards the petition and is stated as being written by 'A true member of the Church of England.' There were two versions of this work published in the same year an eight page edition and an eleven. This is the eleven page edition. This work addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the other six men tells them that they are disrespecting the King by protesting his divine right. The individual discusses the Act in detail and the author tells the Bishops that they have 'divided yourselves from a loyal judicious and religious part of the church you profess yourselves members of'. ESTC Reference R4980. The second work to this set is 'an Answer to a Paper Importing a Petition of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Six Other Bishops to His Majesty' which has been attributed to Henry Care. Care was a Whig propagandist who wrote many anti-Catholic works. It is believed that he founded 'The English Liberties'. ESTC R35842. Both pamphlets collated complete. Two contemporary sources regarding the religious and political problems during the seventeenth century and an interesting insight into contemporary opinion regarding the Seven Bishops. It was this event that contributed heavily to the anti-Catholic riots of 1688 and the Glorious Revolution. Disbound as is usually called for. Externally sound with minor chips to the extremities. Large loss to the front wrap of 'An Address'. Prior owner's inscriptions to the top corner of all leaves as pagination from when they were originally bound. Internally both pamphlets are generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with the odd handling marks and spots. Good Randall Taylor; Henry Hills unknown

A fine very scarce political and religious tract written at the peak of the Popish Plot and therefore ant-Catholic hysteria in England and Scotland. A very scarce pamphlet. ESTC reference no R19980. This is setting A referred to by the ESTC with signature mark 'A' on A1 under 'es' of 'unless'. The first line of p.4 reads 'Lastly if he has' with a lower case 'i'. This work was written in response to Elkanah Settle's pamphlet 'The Character of a Popish Successor'. Settle was a poet and playwright who took an active share in the anti-Popish agitation. However later he exposed Titus Oates and with the Revolution of 1688 his political leanings were more towards the Whigs. This is an analysis and response to Settle's pamphlet. Following this work Settle later recanted his 'The Character of a Popish Successor' and cited the danger of the opinions he expressed. Bound in a limp cloth binding. Externally very smart with just the occasional marks. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd light spots. Very Good Indeed Nathaniel Thompson hardcover

16901747London: : Randal Taylor 1690. Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years summarising Bishop Burnett Stillingfleet and others whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON Presented the First of January 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster by Authority of Parliament against TOLERATION. This pamphlet has been abstracted from a collection and so appears as a disbound item - with the binding marks and stab marks to the spine. No wrapper or cover now held in a protective sleeve. The top edge of the first couple of pages is beginning to come away - although the binding is still holding securely. A touch of darkening to the front and rear pages less so inside. With the fourth line of the imprint reading 'Exchange in Cornhil London. 1683'. Lacking M2 and N3-4. The 'Book of Homilies' are thirty-three sermons developing the reformed doctrines of the Church of England. Homilies were first published during Edward VI's reign before being reprinted during Elizabeth I's reign. A scarce late seventeenth century edition of these Anglican sermons and homilies. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart. Some rubbing to the joints and extremities. Minor bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the head and tail of spine. Internally firmly bound. The title page has been trimmed and remounted to a new leaf. A1 is extended and repaired in margins loss to lower margin of A2. Chips to the extremities of quires B-D and 3C-3D with minor loss to the notes. E1 is strengthened in lower margin and with a small loss to the text from minor holes. The same repair to the bottom margin of 2H1. R2 has a small loss to three words to the bottom paragraph from a hole. Final few leaves are chipped to the edges affecting the page numbers. 16331977London: John Norton for Joyce Norton 1633. A nice copy of this two volume work unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work particularly to the edges and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one. Also lacking is leaf 3I2 page 99/100 with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely a full page plate dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily published in various forms is important as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98 vi 1-98 101-320 iv. 290 x 210 mm 11½ x 8¼ inches. John Norton for Joyce Norton hardcover
