1920002189n.p.: n.p. 1920. The history of early Japanese immigration to the USA is one of struggle oppression and eventual triumph. Due to social and economic forces in both Japan and the US Japanese primarily males began immigrating to the Pacific coastal states in 1880 to fill a need for inexpensive farm labour. From the onset the immigrants faced a growing negative reaction to their presence due partially to a fear of loss of white labour jobs to the new arrivals and also partially driven by a negative view of some social practices of the larger more visible population of Chinese immigrants. An Anti-Asiatic Exclusion League founded in 1905 targeted these early Japanese immigrants and demanded laws prohibiting land ownership intermarriage with white citizens and segregation of Japanese students from their white classmates. These forces elicited a strong reaction from the Japanese government; subsequent negotiations with American lawmakers resulted in the so-named Gentlemen's Agreement in 1908 in which Japan committed to the issuance of immigration passports only to the wives children and parents of existing Japanese immigrants in the US. Japanese male immigration did continue from this period through to the end of WWI due to America's need for labour; however the majority of Japanese immigrants from 1908 onward to the '20s were females many as 'picture' or mail-order brides. By 1920 over 111000 Japanese lived in America comprising both immigrants and the nisei or second generation born in the USA of Japanese parentage. Japanese farmers controlled some 450000 acres of California farm land and some accrued very significant prosperity. The Gentlemen's Agreement while changing the parameters of Japanese immigration to the US did not result in stemming the white prejudice that Japanese immigrants faced and in 1924 America passed the Immigration Quota Law that limited Japanese immigrants to only 100 per year. The present two silver gelatin prints depict an apparently prosperous Japanese family of three generations posed in a studio setting ca. 1920. From a California estate sale the family portrait measures 15.4 x 11.3 cm.; the portrait of the youngest son 12.5 x 8.7 cm. Both prints in fine condition. Fine. 15.4 x 11.3 cm. n.p. unknown
