There is pen marking along the top of the title and an adhesive stain from a postage stamp on the back among other obvious soil markings on front and back. Interior pages are browned with age and have some light soil markings. In the dedication Chaplain T. Faulkner Lee explains that he gave a lively sermon in which he claimed the best soldiers are good and faithful soldiers of Jesus Christ and that it was so well-received he was asked for copies. He delivered this sermon to the officers of the 24th Lancashire Artillery Volunteers on September 19 1869.
