195450707New York: Random House 1954. First printing stated. Fine in near fine jacket and very good slipcase. Signed limited first edition of Faulkner's Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning novel. Set in the trenches of the First World War the grandly conceived FABLE was Faulkner's most overtly political novel and the product of a decade's labor. Marketed by its publisher as the controversial crowning achievement of a career studded with honors and bespangled with praises A FABLE was also perfectly crafted to give Ernest Hemingway fits with its religious symbolism: whatever his own many faults Hemingway wrote at least "I did not write A Fable by William Faulkner." Faulkner meanwhile considered it his masterpiece. A handsome copy in the unusually well preserved original glassine jacket. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original blue cloth stamped with blue and silver crosses. Dark blue topstain. Grey endpapers. In original glassine jacket. Original publisher's slipcase with printed blue and white label. Edition of 1000 signed copies printed on rag paper this copy no. 713. Signed by Faulkner at colophon. Light edgewear and minor chipping to jacket. Moderate toning to slipcase. Overall sound. Random House unknown
