A first edition history and topographical survey of Fulham and Hammersmith by Thomas Faulkner. The first edition of this work. Rebacked with contemporary tree calf boards with renewed calf spine.Illustrated with a frontispiece vignette to the title page engraved dedication folding genealogical table nine plates and numerous vignettes. Collated complete. This is one of three principal works known by Thomas Faulkner an English bookseller and topographer of West London whose local histories went on to be viewed as standard 19th-century references. The work covers the area's etymology roads agriculture gardens churches monuments historical events inhabitants and ancient houses. From the library of George Bird 1774-1851 a builder and bricklayer who resided in Brook Green Hammersmith. The Bird family were responsible for the construction of many local buildings including the earliest parts of Nazareth House and the Sacred Heart School the stonework of the first Hammersmith Bridge and Holy Trinity Church on Brook Green. The Birds were also active in civic development and public welfare and founded the West London Hospital in Hammersmith Road. The coat of arms was formerly placed above the gateway of 190 Shepherds Bush Road. With George's contemporary ownership inscription to the title page and with a presentation inscription to him from one Joseph Purdon the verso of the front free endpaper dated 1835. Rebacked with contemporary tree calf boards with renewed calf spine. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the boards and to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots throughout heaviest to the plates and facing pages which also have offsetting. Handling marks to folding map of Fulham.
