Fine fresh clean and dark example. This document assigns to Random House directly all future income due Faulkner from a three-way agreement among Faulkner Random House and the William Morris Agency. The document relates to Faulkners short story "The Old Man" part of his book "Wild Palms" 1939. The story discusses a convicts release to work on a flood control in Mississippi. It was written as a screenplay to be used on television. Unfortunately the project never went through. Faulkner at this time was writing television scripts attempting to raise some money for travel and to have free time to continue writing on his novel "The Town." 4043Faulkner signed this contract which transferred distribution rights of the film based on Faulkner's story "Turnabout" to the Loew's Corporation. "By an assignment dated September 26 1932 I conveyed to William B. Hawks all rights of every kind. in my story. TURNABOUT published in the March 5 1932 issue of the Saturday Evening Post and registered for copyright. On November 4 1932 William B. Hawks conveyed all. rights. to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. your predecessor. In my assignment. it was provided that I. secure. renewals of all copyrights. The copyright of March 1 1932. was renewed in my name on March 4 1959.Accordingly I now assign and confirm to you. the same rights in the work entitled TURNABOUT." Signed in full on the signature line "William Faulkner.". The film referenced in our document is titled "Today We Live" released in 1933 by MGM. According to the Turner Classics Movies web site this film is listed as being distributed by Loew's which was the parent company of MGM from 1924-1959. The story is about an American World War I aviator who befriends a British torpedo boat pilot and comes to see the war from a different perspective. The film considered a romance drama was produced and directed by Howard Hawks and starred Joan Crawford Gary Cooper Robert Young and Franchot Tone. Faulkner provided dialogue for the film. Hawks purchased the option on the story but Irving Thalberg then Vice President of MGM forced Hawks to hire Crawford for the film and forced Faulkner to write a love interest for the men. Crawford was under contract for MGM at the time.

All of this weakened Faulkner's original story and thus the film's plot. In addition the film apparently included inappropriate use of non-period costumes and an unconvincing Crawford. "Today We Live" turned into a failure. According to a movie review in the "New York Times" on April 15 1933 by Mordaunt Hall this "first of William Faulkner's literary efforts to reach the screen. is understood to have been amplified in the studio by the author. is at times vague and cumbersome. It possesses however the spark of sincerity. " Margin tears and stains show on right margins of both pages. unknown books

1833713Winchester Va. 1833. Broadside 4to. 290 x 160 mm. 11 ¼ x 6 ¼ inches. Printed in two columns signed in type by Charles J. Faulkner at Winchester dated March 8 1833 at conclusion. Lightly dust-soiled pale stain affecting perhaps one-third of the left-hand margin and column of text. Neatly silked on verso. Withal about very good. Following the August 1831 Nat Turner rebellion in Southampton County a last effort was made by moderate Virginians to gradually abolish slavery. Faulkner a 26-year-old lawyer and assemblyman along with Thomas Jefferson Randolph sponsored legislation to free all children born of slave parents after July 4 1840. His speech emphasized the evil of slavery for Southern white labor noting that slavery "converts the energy of the community into indolence--its power into imbecility--its efficiency into weakness.Shall society suffer that the slave-holder may continue to gather his crop of human flesh" As the Assembly was malapportioned in favor of the Tidewater slaveocracy the proposal lost rather narrowly and nearly thirty years later the Confederacy was assured of Virginia's succession. It is perhaps not surprising that Faulkner "comparatively a stranger" to the county but a member of the Virginia House of Delegates at this time 1831-34 was not successful in his campaign to represent Virginia in the U.S. Senate. However Faulkner was elected to three terms in Congress from Virginia in the 1850s. He was elected to Congress from West Virginia after the Civil War. In the interim he served as Minister to France during the Buchanan administration and on the staff of Stonewall Jackson. Dictionary of American Biography. Not in Hummel. In the midst of a campaign for election as delegate to the 1850 Virginia Constitutional Convention Faulkner writes: "My name has been placed before you as a candidate of a seat in the approaching Convention of Virginia . here are my opinions on such points as I believe the voter may desire information: . extend the right of suffrage to every male citizen of mature years . in the apportionment of Representation in the General Assembly regard should be had to the white population exclusively three columns of explanation follows . election of the Governor by the people . one constitutional Court abolishing County Courts . officers of the state should be elected not appointed . one of the highest duties of a Republic is to supply every destitute child within its limits the means of a Primary education . I would prohibit the General Assembly from making any loans to or guaranteeing the bonds of incorporated companies. With Faulkner having won election to the convention three of his positions held sway after the voting: the Assembly-appointed Governor's Council was abolished and judges on various state courts would face election by an expanded electorate and property requirements for voting were abolished at several places in the address Faulkner expresses the need to consider the wishes of the residents of Western Virginia as being "as worthy of confidence" as those of Eastern Virginia. Faulkner 1806-1884 a native of Martinsburg Va. won office regularly to Virginia's General Assembly in the 1830s and 1840s advocating emancipation during the early years; he then served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1851-1859. During the Civil War Faulkner served as Assistant Adjutant General to Stonewall Jackson; following the war he was engaged in railroad enterprises and represented West Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives 1875-1877.

unknown books
