This edition should not be confused with a far more expensive hardcover containing a 45rpm record that Cape Goliard Press also issued in 1968. Michigan-born poet Ben King 1857-1894 spent much of his life in Chicago where he was a member of the Chicago Press Club and the Whitechapel Club. He was considered Michigan's favorite poet for at least 25 years after his death. These poems published well after his death are written in an African-American slave vernacular and the accompanying photographs are all of a nostalgic nature depicting happy or distinguished subjects. Sewn wraps in stiff paper with illustration. The book has dampstaining to the bottom inch to inch and a half of the pages which has discolored some pages and faded the date of Kinnell's inscription; the dustjacket is slightly affected by the damping on its bottom edge. The 20th anniversary issue of Beatitude "the most important Beat-associated little magazine out of San Francisco in the late 1950s." Steven Belletto <i>The Beats: A Literary History</i> Cambridge University Press 2020 page 29. <br /><br />This issue is especially notable for a lengthy tribute to Bob Kaufman 1925-1986 a Black poet who was one of the founders of Beatitude. There are several poems by Kaufman from 1975-78 as well as an analysis of his poems by Raymond Foye. <br /><br />Other contributors include a "Who's Who" of the San Francisco poetry scene including Gregory Corso Lawrence Ferlinghetti Jack Kerouac Carol Bergé Harold Norse Anne Waldman Jack Micheline Allen Ginsberg Peter Orlovsky David Meltzer Neeli Cherkovski and many others including some who are published for the first time.
