Died in Boston October 15 1678."<br> <br> "The Old South Meeting House also known as the Old South Church Boston Mass. was built in 1729 as a Puritan meeting house. It was an assembly spot for prominent meetings from colonial times through the American revolution. The building was restored after the revolution and remained an active church until 1872. It was saved from demolition in 1877 when it was established as a museum. A volume was published to help raise funds for the preservation entitled Poems of the "Old South" Boston: William F. Gill & Co. 1877. It was published again in 1879 by the Old South Fair Committee. Both published versions include a note on verso of the title page: 'Published for the benefit of the Old South preservation fund.'" 1813186249Osaka: Kajima Chubee; Katsuta Zensuke & Noda Jihee Kyoto 1813. Poetry networks spanning the islands of Japan First edition of this illustrated directory introducing over 600 early modern poets with their names pseudonyms and addresses and examples of their verse. It was published at a time of great expansion for the art form and remains a valuable source of information on both major and minor literary figures of its time. Shime Chosai 1757-1824 was a haikai poet and warehouse owner based in Osaka. He is best known for his large circle of artistic friends and acquaintances with whom he regularly corresponded in person and by letter. When it came to compiling this directory Chosai's social circle allowed him to include not just those living in the social capitals of Edo Kyoto and Osaka but also those in places like Nagano Tokushima and Himeji. Many would likely have been forgotten if he had not recorded them in this work. The poets profiled in these volumes include Kokan Shoroku d.1813 a close friend of the famous poet Kobayashi Issa; Futoda Banri who could trace his poetic lineage to Basho's disciple Sugiyama Sanpu; and a number of women. Some are only represented by their portrait and their poem such as the otherwise unidentified young woman Rieko vol. 5 f. 45r while others are complete with full records. For example Shujo vol. 1 f. 26v is listed as living in Omi province near Kyoto with the real name Mimatsu and being a particularly talented waka poet. As noted by Ito Yoshitaka in Japanese: "Banka jinmeiroku was published in a transitional phase between the 'revival' of haikai poetry in the Kansei period late 1790s and the 'standardization' of the art in the Tenpo period 1830s. During this period haikai poets began to communicate with each other widely by letter. Banka jinmeiroku reflects the popularity and demand for this interconnectivity" p. 17. 5 vols quarto. It comes from the private library of Robert Allan Fitzsimons Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons 1892-1978 with his bookplate to second endpage. Previously the property of Shakespearean actor Johnston Forbes Robertson 1853-1937 with an inscription to FEP reading: "From Mrs Grosvenor June 6th 1913 My last night before a London audience J Forbes-Robertson." Newspaper clipping from The Times April 25 1960 in which the silent film release of Forbes-Robertson's 1913 performance of Hamlet is reviewed is laid-in to front endpapers. There are a couple of faint marks to boards and minor tanning to the endpapers. Spine is lightly sunned and very slightly worn at ends. Contents are clean and unmarked. He wrote this heroic poem on Charlemagne while living in exile in England where he was forced to stay after attempting to obtain a passport to go to America. Kyoto Koka 3 1846 Choundo a lovely oblong string-bound album with the original blind-stamped green covers and printed paper title label all in a clasped chitsu case. 17.1 x 23.7 cm. The title refers to a famous line from a Basho haiku describing a "summer's grove". There is but one delicate color-printed illustration of a bird in flight but many pages of white on black ishizuri style calligraphy and delicate renderings of the poems in an elegant calligraphed hand. A deluxe production emblematic of the level of sophistication achieved by the publishing industry in Japan even in late Edo. Very unusual - in none of the standard references. unknown

A Near Fine or better spine slightly faded though silver remains bright and darkened page edges. Very scarce particularly in this condition. Cyrano de Bergerac was first published in France by Charpentier et Fasquelle in 1898 following its stage production at the Porte Saint-Martin Theater in Paris on December 28 1897 and first translated into English by Kingsbury for Lamson Wolffe the same year. Mansfield was the first actor to play Cyrano in the United States in an English translation. The play is based loosely on the life of Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac 1619-1655 Rostand’s favorite writer. "Yet the character as portrayed by Rostand – with his excessively-enlarged nose his almost super-human duelling skills and his ability to improvise eloquent poetic speeches – is far from an exact portrait of the real-life Cyrano of the seventeenth century. . . . Possessed of a keen intellect with an insatiable appetite for reading and for learning he constantly experiments with when he is not challenging outright the established social scientific political and religious ideas of his day. This questioning satirising and ridiculing of contemporary authorities along with an open-mindedness to new concepts that remains strikingly modern has earned Cyrano a firm place amongst the libertin writers of seventeenth-century France."
