Originally published in 1958 this classic of modern poetry contains some of Lawrence Ferlinghetti's best-known work. The twenty-nine poems of wide-ranging topics sum Lawrence Ferlinghetti himself: warm cynical open observant and in love with everyday life. A challenge to the typesetters this edition is set as the original was with lines of varying justifications that lead the eye back and forth on the page. "The title of this book is taken from Henry Miller's "Into the Night Life" and expresses the way I felt about these poems when he wrote them during a short period in the 1950's-as if they were taken together a kind of Coney Island of the mind a kind of circus of the soul." Lawrence Ferlinghetti 1919 – 2021 was a poet novelist playwright founder of City Lights Publishers owner of City Lights Bookstore political activist and literary hero of San Francisco CA. Though he was immersed in the Beat culture beginning in the 1950s he insisted that he was not a Beat writer. Begins with a 29-entry List of Poems by First Lines. Some of these poems were previously published in periodicals including Chicago Review and The Evergreen Review. The frontispiece is a full plate portrait of the author loosely drawn by R. B. Kitaj 1932 - 2007. Ronald Brooks Kitaj was an influential artist in England and the United States known best as a painter but also a printmaker and often controversial social activist. This is copy 188 of a limited edition of 300 numbered copies. The colophon is signed in pencil by the author and the illustrator. This seventy-fourth publication of the Arion Press was designed by Andrew Hoyem and a team of nine. Handset Goudy Light and Goudy Heavy types and the text was printed letterpress on mouldmade German Hahnemuhle Bugra paper laid lines and texture to one side with the other side smooth. The portrait drawings were reproduced from the originals and printed on an Epson 4000 inkjet. Bound in quarter black cloth with mustard yellow paper over boards. The front is printed with Kitaj' loose surreal portraiture. The back is printed with Kitaj' signature and the letterpressed author’s name and book title. Paper title label to spine. In the publisher's slipcase of yellow paper over boards like the book and edged in black. Title and author printed on both sides. This large handsomely-produced book is clean and in Fine condition.
