Hart wrote poetry and plays and was an accomplished jazz pianist and drummer. In the late 1950s Hart Jack Kerouac Philip Lamantia and David Amram gave jazz poetry readings in New York. From 1959-61 Hart wrote theatre and book reviews for the Village Voice.
