The author George Hill 1796-1871 graduated from Yale in 1816 and taught mathematics for the Navy beginning in 1827. His experience in the Mediterranean with the Navy inspired his poem The Ruins of Athens which was published anonymously in 1831. This is the first appearance of the other poems in this volume. In Good- Condition: cover is soiled with several small ink spots; ends of spine and corners rubbed; ends of spine fraying; endpapers are discolored; foxing throughout; a few leaves are partially detached but volume is complete. This is the third edition of the translation by English poet Edward FitzGerald 1809-1883 of verses attributed to Persian poet Omar Khayyam 1048-1131. One of the former owner's added "by Edward Fitzgerald" on the title page a well as verses from other poets in the lower margins of two pages and on the back free endpaper including a quote from Goethe in German script.
