The author Warren Dutton 1774-1857 was a lawyer from Connecticut who also served in the state legislature. This poem was his Master's oration at his commencement from Yale. In his Biographical Sketches of the Graduates of Yale College 1911 Franklin Bowditch Dexter describes Dutton's poem as "Unusually sprightly and clever" with a passage "given to the ridicule of Abraham Bishop's Oration on political delusion." Original deluxe three-quarter black morocco raised hubs and gilt edges. Crown of spine bumped and some light wear to covers and edges but an excellent copy of this scarce comprehensive anthology of several centuries of Euopean verse. Includes Longfellow's original translations of many authors. This particular copy bears the bookplate of William Winter nicknamed "Weeping Willie" for his tear-jerking verse a minor poet who later became a notable theatre critic. Winter's first book was dedicated to Longfellow and published in 1855. Although Winter knew Longfellow personally he was a noted bibliophile and we assume this book was simply purchased by him and not given to him. Minor foxing and toning and light stains to title-page.
