Apollinaire is considered one of the foremost poets of the early 20th century as well as one of the most impassioned defenders of Cubism and a forefather of Surrealism. He is credited with coining the term "Cubism" in 1911 to describe the emerging art movement and the term 'surrealism' in 1917 to describe the works of Erik Satie. The term Orphism 1912 is also his. He wrote poems without punctuation attempting to be resolutely modern in both form and subject. Apollinaire wrote one of the earliest Surrealist literary works the play The Breasts of Tiresias 1917 which became the basis for Francis Poulenc's 1947 opera Les Mamelles de Tirésias. Apollinaire was active as a journalist and art critic for Le Matin L'Intransigeant L'Esprit Nouveau Mercure de France and Paris Journal. In 1912 Apollinaire cofounded Les Soirées de Paris fr an artistic and literary magazine. Two years after being wounded in World War I Apollinaire died in the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918." In 1966 the Robert Fraser Gallery was prosecuted for staging an exhibition of works by Dine that was described as indecent but not obscene. The works were removed from the gallery by Scotland Yard and Fraser aka Groovy Bob was charged under a 19th-century law that applied to street beggars. Fraser was fined 20 guineas and legal costs. Issued with eight original pochoir plates each signed and numbered by Dine; INCOMPLETE; this copy lacking one plate containing only seven pochoir plates. Additionally illustrated in black-and-white. Text is unbound and loose as issued with plates and text laid into an illustrated wrapper with original worn and chipped glassine and a color printed slipcase. The spine of the illustrated wrapper is creased and somewhat worn and the slipcase is moderately sunned and somewhat soiled. Hand-numbered 248 of 250 copies and signed on the colophon by Jim Dine and the translator Ron Padget. The single pencil-numbered pochoir differs from the colophon and is 247/250. Measures 260 x 210 mm. In addition to being pencil-initialed by the artist "J.D." five of the seven pochoirs are also pencil-initialed "A.P." for Artist's Proof. Tanglewood Press Inc. Paperback books
