Unlike Bukowski's earlier autobiographical novels Pulp is deliberately over-the-top. It mixes absurd humor cheap-paperback tropes and existential melancholy reading like a spoof of detective stories and a self-aware meditation on mortality. Beneath the jokes and surreal twists is a sense that Bukowski is saying goodbye - to literature to his alter egos and to his readers.
