Flush not only played an active part in human life and inspired poetry but was himself a dog estimated by all who knew him as a dog of worth and character well deserving celebration.

"FLUSH is only by way of a joke. I was so tired after THE WAVES that I lay in the garden and read the Browning letters and the figure of their dog made me laugh so I couldn't resist making him a Life. I wanted to play a joke on Lytton Strachey -- it was to parody him. But then it grew too long and I dont think its up to much now. But this is all very egotistical." -- WOOLF Vol. V. p.161-2.
