br. Cesare De Lollis fu uno dei più importanti filologi romanzi italiani fra Otto e Novecento. Formatosi all'interno della scuola storica, visse in prima persona la crisi culturale e metodologica di inizio secolo, mettendo in discussione il metodo dei maestri e avvicinandosi all'estetica crociana. La sua concezione della filologia romanza lo portò a uscire dai confini del medioevo e a inoltrarsi nella modernità, con uno sguardo intrinsecamente comparato alle tradizioni letterarie dei paesi romanzi (Italia, Francia e Spagna in particolare).
