La storia della lirica romanza coincide con la storia stessa della poesia dei trovatori e si estende su un arco temporale di poco più di due secoli, dalla fine del secolo XI agli ultimi anni del Duecento. Il volume traccia un profilo completo del genere lirico nel medioevo romanzo toccando la questione delle origini, delle fonti, dello stile e del pubblico, esaminandone i tipi principali (la "canso", il sirventese, la canzone di crociata, il lamento funebre, la pastorella) e analizzando la produzione delle diverse aree culturali in cui il genere si diffuse (Francia, Provenza, penisola iberica).
