Old leather boards binding; needs rebacking. The pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe is attributed to Longus, a third century A.D. Greek poet. Idyllic in nature, the poem tells the charming story of the love of a goat herd and a shepherdess. Daphnis and Chloe was widely popular in France and England in the 17th and 18th century. This text was translated from the Greek by Jacques Amyot (1513-1593). The engraved illustrations are by an anonymous pupil of Bernard Picart (1673-1733) one of the greatest French artist / engravers of the era. FR-VOYAGE 3RD FL

This book focuses on the author as the motivating agent of the text. It is conducted with reference to two texts from the end of the twelfth century in which the material selected by the author operates as the vehicle for the central ideas. The structure and amplification of the material bring the author's intention to the fore, clarifying and enhancing the initial conception of the work. Far from being a contrived and artificial framework, fiction is defined as a craft which organizes and glosses material, creating unity through authorial perspective. ; Studies in the Humanities: Literature-Politics-Society; Vol. 59
